About the community

• Shahjahanabad, now known as Old Delhi,


has been a city where traditional crafts
have been a part of the lifestyle of the
residents. Many traditional craftsmen are
found in Shahjahanabad. Here are some
of the names of handicraft artisans in old
delhi –

• Ironsmiths (lohars),
• Stone Grinders
• Calligraphers (qatibs)
• Artists (Naqshanabis)
• Potters (kumhars)
• Bangle makers (chooriwalas)
• Embroiderers
• Perfume traders
• Khadi weavers
Issues & Challenges faced by Community of
Handicraft Artisans
• The skill of rural artisans
continues to be old and
technology is traditional. Their
economic status is far from  Neglect by State and Central
satisfactory, which makes their Governments

Area of Intervention needed for Community of
Handicraft Artisans
• Old Delhi is the home of art
and crafts. However,
handicrafts have not received
as much attention in Orissa as
they deserve.
• Marketing is main neglected
function in handicrafts which can
be managed effectively by
agencies to place the products
to the right customer in the right
manner having a customer
centric approach. Government
should try to study and assess
the market demand for craft
products and also should find
out the necessary design
requirement awareness among
the craft persons.
Govt Programmes to support the handcraft
Artisans -
• Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojna - Under Dastkar Shashktikaran Yojna subsection of this
scheme, the programme enables community empowerment to mobilise artisans into self-help
groups.
• Mega cluster scheme - The programme follows a mega cluster-based approach in scaling up
infrastructural and production chains at handicraft centres that have remained unorganized
and have not kept up with modernization and other developments.
• Kumhar Shashaktikaran Yojana - is an initiative program under the Khadi and Village
Industries Commission (KVIC), which was started to empower the Potters community in the
remotest locations in the country. Providing the best facilities and full training for better work
outcomes.
• Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) is a credit linked subsidy
scheme, for setting up of new micro-enterprises and to generate employment opportunities in
rural as well as urban areas of the country through KVIC, State Khadi & Village Industries
Board (KVIB) and District Industries Centre (DIC)

Community (THROUGH MELA, EXHIBITIONS)
• OBJECTIVE – to empower the Artisans community through Marketing, financial support
of them in mela, exhibitions.

• The handicraft artisans are the masters of the handicrafts, which they have been pursuing
relentlessly with great devotion for years.
• government should take steps for preventing duplicating of designs. Design registration
should be done.
• Government should help the artisans to take part in different mela, exhibitions etc. Like
other craft in case of stone carving, marketing is the main problem which should be taken
care of process of making the craft should be improved.
• Lack of capital in hands of craftsmen is a great hindrance in the progress of the craft. So
different new products should be introduced. There should be restriction on machine
produced craft in the market.
• Loan should be provided to the craftsmen.
