The Strength of Acids and Bases

§ Strong Acid
For strong acids with α = 1, almost all of the acids will dissociate
into ions.
[H+] = a . Ma
where, a = valence of acid
Ma = concentration of acid

Example
Determine the value of concentration of H+ ion and pH in 0,2 M
H2SO4 solution.
The Strength of Acids and Bases
§ Weak Acid
For weak acids with 0< α < 1, only part of each acids will
dissociate into ions.

[+ ] =  ×  ∝=

where, Ka = ionization constant of acid
Ma = concentration of acid
α = ionization degree
Example
Determine the value of concentration and pH in 0,1 M CH3COOH
solution with Ka = 10-5.
