 Question:
Interpreting Simple Linear Regression
Answer the questions about the following computer-
generated information.
Linear Correlation Coefficient r=0.794556
Coefficient of Determination=0.631319
Standard Error of Estimate(SEE)=12.9668
Explained Variation=5182.41
Unexplained Variation=3026.49
Total Variation=8208.90
Equation of Regression Line
y’=0.726983X + 16.5523
1. Are both variables moving in same direction?
2. Which number measures distances from prediction line to actual
values?
3. Which number is the slope of regression line?
4. Which number is the y-intercept of regression line?
7. Which number measures variation explained by the regression?
8. Which number measures the scatter of points about the regression
line?
 Solution:
1.
Since both dependent and independent variables have the same
sign(+ve) that is why both are moving in the same direction.
2.
Unexplained variation is a parameter which measures the
distance from prediction line to the actual values having value
3026.49 in this question.
3.
Slope of the regression line is the constant factor multiplying with
independent variable X. The number 0.725983 is the slope of
regression line.
4.
In the problem we have here the y intercept is the constant value
added on the right-hand side of the regression line equation and it is
16.5523 here.
7.
The parameter Coefficient of determination measures the
variation explained by the regression and that is 0.631319 here.
8.
The parameter Standard Error of Estimate (SEE) is the parameter
which measures the scatter of points about regression line and it is
12.9668 here.
