Romero is a 1989 American biographical film depicting the story of Salvadoran Archbishop

Óscar Romero, who organized peaceful protests against the violent military regime, eventually at

the cost of his own life. During the 1977 El Salvadoran election, civil unrest was at an all time

high over fear of election fraud. In the middle of a gorilla uprising, the military sends death

squads to detain, torture, and kill anyone who speaks against its terrible human rights record. The

military is also preventing its citizens from even reaching the polls. In the movie soldiers are

shown blocking buses bringing people into town for election day, when the people decide to

walk the military shoots up their van so they do not have any transportation to return home. The

question raised in this movie is should religion belong in politics? This movie makes you think

about that question because Oscar Romero, who was an archbishop, was setting up peaceful

protests against the violent military regime which eventually cost Romero his life. I think this

question is still relevant today, and a lot of people are trying to say that religion does not belong

in politics and some are trying to get rid of it. We have gotten to a point in time where being a

christian is not easy, you might even be persecuted because of it. John 15:18-20 states “If the

world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love

you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.

That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his

master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will

obey yours also.” 1 John 3:13 says “Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world

hates you.” There are more verses that are similar to the two I stated above, but they all represent

the same thing, that being a christian, following christ, and being like christ will not be easy.

People will ridicule and attack us just for believing in something that they do not think exists, but
we have to remember that Jesus went through the same things we are going through right now

so there is not need to be afraid.
