TRAINING PROBLEM

Main Topic: Axial Load

Made by: Rodrigo López Elaboration date: September 2022

1. OUTCOMES

a. Analizar y diseñar miembros sujetos a una carga axial o una deformación directa
b. Determinar la deformación en diferentes tipos de problemas
c. Analizar los efectos de esfuerzo térmicos, concentraciones de esfuerzos, deformaciones
inelásticas y esfuerzos residuales.

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT

The rigid beam ABC is supported as shown in the figure 1. The pin connections at B, C and D
are each double shear connections, The pin material is red brass C23000, Tie rod (1) was made
of Aluminium 6061-T6, and it is exposed to 38ºC temperature gradient. A uniformly distributed
load of w = 15 kN/m is applied to the beam as shown. A factor of safety of 2.2 is required for all
components. Assume a = 700 mm, b = 900 mm, c = 300 mm, and d = 650 mm. In the design is
necessary that the point A not exceed a displacement of 5 hundredths of a millimeter. At the pin
connections, D and B, there are stress concentrations and is necessary in the design to consider
this important phenomenon. In order to design the ends of the tie rod (1), is required to use a
stress-concentration factor (K) equal to 2.5

The design should have into account factors such as economical (lower price), environmental
(resistance to humidity and corrosion and climate changes), and the best resistance/weight ratio
in all components, besides the design demands an easy assembly that’s mean the use of the
less possible elements at the system. The initial material selected is not possible to change and
is possible to increase the number of elements in the system.
3. ACTIVITIES

a. Design the complete tied rod (1).

b. Design the pins at B, C and D.
c. Design the complete supports D. Do not forget to calculate the normal and bearing stress.
d. Determine the displacement of point A with the mechanical and thermal loads acting
simultaneously.
e. Realize the re-design (if it s necessary) of the tied road in order to satisfy the design
constrains.
f. Prepare a technical report about the structure design.
g. Realize the mechanical drawings for the element designed.
