PROBLEM: Unit has no Digital display. Unit appears dead., but has a small
amount of volume when Volume control is turned wide open. AC adapter is
known to be good. (Power supply loss of 4.6v to IC8).
CURE: The first point to check when the above symptoms appear is at the
junction of R68 (390 Ohm) and p40 (5.1 Volt Zener Diode). [Refer to the
BC-145XL power supply schematic.] The voltage at this point should be about
5.1 Volts. If this voltage is absent then D40 will need to be replaced. An
NTE-SO10A (5.1V 1/2Watt) is the direct replacement for this diode. However
we recommend replacing this diode with a NTE-135A (5.1V 1 Watt) so as to
prevent any future problems from reoccurring. Although we have found D40 to
be bad in some units, this has not been the only cause of this problem. If
you find that you have $.1 Volts at the junction of R68 and D40 then proceed
to check the voltage at the junction of p39 (181555) and R121 (560 Ohm).
This voltage should read about 4.6 Volts. If this voltage is absent then
usually D39 has opened up and is not conducting. An NTE-177 is the direct
replacement for D39. Once D39 has been replaced, recheck for the 4.6 volt
supply. Normally this will cure the problem in most cases.
‘Note: In nine out of ten units, when the above symptoms appear, either one or both of the above
problems will exist, These problems tend to be more prevalent ifthe unit has been plugged in during
‘an electrical storm or has experienced some type of spiking from the electrical source. Any good
spike protection device will help eliminate any future problems.Uniden® BC-140XL & BO-145KL
PROBLEM: Hum from speaker, No normal operation, Unit still has digital
readout. IC3[8 Volt Regulator] is running very hot to the touch.
CURE__: Check for 8 volts at the output of IC3. If this voltage is absent
or very low , normally C59 (a 1000uf 10V electrolytic] has shorted or is
leaking. In some cases if C59 has shorted it may have also caused IC3 to
fail. First replace C59 with a 1000 uf 16V or higher. After replacing C59,
you still do not have 8 volts at the output of IC3, replace IC3. An NTE-964
is the direct replacement for this component. After replacing 1C3, you
should now find that you now have 8 volts on the output. Make sure that
after you replace IC3 that it is not running hot to the touch. If it is,
some other component on this line may be shorted and causing excessive
current drain, One such component may be C48 [a 47uf 10v electrolytic (value
may vary in some units)]. If you find that C48 may need to be replaced, be
sure that you use a capacitor of the same value but with a 16V or higher
voltage rating.

PROBLEM: Unit does not scan, no audio or Squelch. Still programs and has
digital display. Unit will still review frequencies.
CURE: Locate IC-1 (MC3359P) 18 pin chip. Check the Voltage on Pin 4. This
voltage should read 7.6 Volts. If this voltage is absent or very low the
suspect part is C38, a 100uf 10Volt electrolytic capacitor. C38 is located
next to FT2, an orange filter with the #SFR 450D on it. Replace C38 with a
100uf 16 Volt or higher capacitor. After replacing C38 you should now have
voltage on pin 4 of IC-1 and the unit should now function properly. Note:
Some of these units came from the factory with 47uF capacitors installed for
38. If you find that this is the case be sure to replace C38 with a
capacitor of the same value, but with at least a voltage rating of 16 volts
or higher. ‘This will help prevent any misalignment that could be caused by
using a different capacitor value.

PROBLEM: No Audio. Unit still scans and programs. Voltage on pin 8 of IC2
(TBA 820M) chip is very low or absent. Voltage should read about 6.5 volts
on Pin 8.
CURE: locate C52 next to IC2 (TBA 820M) audio chip. This is a 470uf 10
volt electrolytic capacitor connected to Pin @ of IC2. Change C52 to a
470uf 25 Volt. This will restore normal audio to the biggest part of these
units. However, these same symptoms can also be caused by other defective
components. Bad speaker, bad Audio Chip, etc...! If replacing C52 does not
cure the problem check the voltages on IC2. Refer to the diagram below for
the voltages for this chip. This diagram also applies to the Uniden Bearcat
model BC140XL & BC142xL.

PROBLEM: Squelch does not break when a signal is received.
CURE: Check the voltages on the base of Q9. They should read 0.1 volts
unsquelched and about 0.7 volts squelched. If these voltages are not
correct Q9 may be defective. Replacement should cure the problem.

PROBLEM: No rushing noise from speaker, unit has no readable channel
display, only one segment of channel display is lit.
CURE: Check for 7.5 Volts on the cathode (banded) side of D24 (1$1555
diode). If this voltage is absent, usually one of two possible problems has
occurred. Either D24 has opened up or C88 (220uf 10v) has shorted.
Sometimes if C88 has shorted, the excessive current drain will cause D24 to
open also. We have also found 024 opened up in some units, yet C88 tested
OK. Regardless, you should replace both D24, and C88 with new components.
NTE-177 or GE-300 are direct replacements for D24. C88 should be replaced
with a 220uf 16v electrolytic, so as to help prevent any future problems.

CURE: Check for 7.6 Volts on Pin 6 of IC7. If this voltage is absent,
or unusually low, normally C104 (a 47uf 10V Electrolytic) has shorted or is
leaking. If this is the case, C104 should be replaced with a 47uf 16V
electrolytic. Once C104 has been replaced the voltage should now be about
7.6 volts on Pin 6 of ICT.

PROBLEM: Rushing noise from speaker comes and goes, unit has display, still

CURE Refer to the diagram on the previous page and check for 22 Volts
at the junction of R108 (47 ohm) and C96 (33uf 25V). If this voltage is
absent or low, first check to make sure that the 22.2 volts is present on
the other side of R108. If it is present then C96 has either shorted or is
leaking. Replace C96 with a 33uf SOV Electrolytic. After replacing C96 you
should now have 22 volts present at the junction of R108 and C96 and the
unit should function normally.

16 Channel Modification
The BC-142XL is actually the same scanner as the BC-145XL. It is
basically the same all the way down to the IC controller chip. Both scanners
employ the UC1116 (16 channel Integrated Controller Chip) for this purpose.
However the BC-142XLT is capable of only 10 channels, while the BC-145XL is
capable of 16 channels.
So if both units are basically the same, why the channel difference?
Answer: 1 small 181555 diode. This diode is located on the bottom of IC8
(Uc1116), the controller chip. It is connected between pin 27 and pin 12
(the cathode connects to pin 27) of IC8. Once this diode has been removed
the unit will now accept and scan 16 channels instead of 10. (Note: This
modification will also work for the BC-140XL scanner also.)
Carefully remove the housing screws and disassemble the unit. Remove the
five screws that secure the circuit board to the plastic case. Once this is
done carefully lift the circuit board enough to see the ground wire that
connects the circuit board ground to the metal plate attached to the botton
of the plastic case and unsolder. Next unsolder the other ground wire that
is connected to the Antenna connector ground. Now the board should lift
out.
Next turn the board over and locate the metal shield cover soldered over
the ICB board area. Carefully unsolder all five solder connections and lift
the plate off. You should now be able to see the small signal diode
connected between Pin 27 and Pin 12 of ICB, Remove this diode. Once you have
removed this diode, replace the metal shield and resolder it back to the
circuit board. Reconnect the ground wires and reinstall the circuit board.
I all has gone well you will now be able program and scan 16 channels
instead of 10.
