accursed of God, the destroyer and devourer who is “wearing God’s anger” and “lacking
of our human kind". in joy.”

Into the Hero…

After getting to know the two major characters, Beowulf and Grendel, get to know the movie better by
answering the questions that follow.

1. What was the problem that arose in the story? (5 points)

_ Grendel's domination of Heorot Hall, the vengeance of Grendel's mother after Grendel is slain, and the
rage of the dragon after a thief steals a treasure that it has been guarding.__

2. What does Heorot hall symbolize and why? (5 points)

The mead-hall is the symbol of a society: it is in this central place that the people gather to feast, socialize, and
listen to the scop (bard) perform and thereby preserve the history of the people. Heorot, as the largest mead-
hall in the world, symbolized  the might and power of the Spear-Danes under Hrothgar.

3. Why did Grendel attack King Hrothgar’s people? (5 points)

Grendel attacks because he is jealous and not welcome in Herot. He is powerful and a sly creature, he has no
respect for life. Grendel hunts the people in Herot when they sleep.

4. Why did Beowulf seem to have an all-powerful stature in the story? (5 points)

He is deemed as courageous and brave for having the guts to fight the human-eating monster; Grendel, with his
bare hands. He may not have slain the beast but he managed to wound the beast, making Grendel (the beast)
run to his lair shrieking and howling in pain.

5. Who among our modern-day heroes would you liken Beowulf to? Why? (5 points)

Superman is like Beowulf and fights with superhuman strength, while Batman is a superhero without any special
powers who must rely on his wits and determination. There are a whole host of superheroes who follow in
Beowulf's footsteps, including the Hulk and Thor.

6. How do people overcome life struggles that require them to choose sides between the good and the bad?
(5 points)

They allow themselves to feel each side’s and take the courage to think of what really is good for them. They
think big and keep a positive mindset.
