a) Find a 99% confidence interval for the difference in mean completion times for
these two groups.
b) Based on the confidence interval in part (a), is there sufficient evidence to indicate
a difference in the average time to completion for the two groups? Explain.
3. (Mendenhall p.311, Q:8.64) Born between 1980 and 1990, Generation Next is engaged
with technology, and the vast majority is dependent upon it. Suppose that in a survey
of 500 female and 500 male students in Generation Next, 345 of the females and 365
of the males reported that they decided to attend college in order to make more money.

a) Construct a 98% confidence interval for the difference in the proportions of female
and male students who decided to attend college in order to make more money.
b) What does it mean to say that you are “98% confident”?
c) Based on the confidence interval in part a, can you conclude that there is a
difference in the proportions of female and male students who decided to attend
college in order to make more money?
4. (Mendenhall p.385, Q:10.31 by edited) A pollution control inspector suspected that a
river community was releasing amounts of semitreated sewage into a river. To check
his theory, he drew five randomly selected specimens of river water at a location above
the town, and another five below. The dissolved oxygen readings (in parts per million)
are as follows:
Construct a 95% confidence interval for the difference in the mean dissolved oxygen
contents for locations above and below the town. Can you conclude that there is a
difference in the mean oxygen content between above the town and below the town?
Explain.
[Hint: Firstly, check the equality of variance assumption]
5. (Mendenhall p.374, Q:10.8 by edited) An article in Archaeometry involved an analysis
of 26 samples of Romano-British pottery, found at four different kiln sites in the United
Kingdom. The samples were analyzed to determine their chemical composition and the
percentage of aluminum oxide in each of 10 samples at two sites is shown below.
Construct a 95% confidence interval for the difference in the average percentage of
aluminium oxide at the two sites.
