SUBJECT: GE 1: UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

ACTIVITY 1

Understanding ourselves is a must. If we want to know more about ourselves, we need to study
it. We need to understand the different perspective or philosophy of different philosopher. For
us to have an better idea and knowledge about us more.

I understand myself more thanks to the different philosophy or perspective of the different
philosopher that we discuss. Thanks to Socrates and Plato because i came to know that every
man just like myself is compose of body and soul that the soul is permanent and the body is not.
Next one is the philosophy of Saint Augustine about devoting ourselves to God to live better.
Knowing this is very important to me because i'am a religious person and i came to a realisation
that when i finish my journey on this lifetime, i need to prepare myself to more promising life
ahead of me, which the eternal life that we can get if we devote ourselves to God on this lifetime.
Third one is Rene Descartes about his philosophy that the mind is the thinker or "extenza" and
the body is the extension mind, which i think because as i grow old now, that's what i came to
know about myself. Fourth is John Locke that all humans have a blank state upon coming to
this world. I understand more that when we are young, we don't know anything and we just learn
form our environment and to the teachings of the people that sorround us. Fifth is the
philosophy of David Hume that the self is just a bundle of impression and impression is the one
that we experience upon growing up. Also there is the philosophy of Immanuel Kant about the
two kind of conciousness, the empirical and Transcendal apperception. The seventh one is the
philosophy of Paul Churchland that the self is defined by the movement of mind. Lastly is the
philosophy of Merleau-Ponty. He said that the body and mind is intertwined that it cannot be
separated. I understand thatthe bldy and mind of a person is working together.

In conclusion, every philosopher has a philosophy that can help us to understand ourselves
more. Thanks to them we can study and learn about ourselves.
