What is the difference between long-scale and short-scale contrast?

Long-scale and short-scale contrast describe the number of different

densities between black and white on the image. The short-scale
contrast image has fewer steps between black and white and is a high-
contrast image. On the other hand, the long-scale contrast image has
more steps between black and white and is a low-contrast image.
