Moving towards solutions

- Akanksha Priyadarshini
The future course of events in the security council on the 9th of august, 1990
look optimistic and driven towards finding a solution on the impending crisis
between Iraq and Kuwait.
The committee discussed the applicability of the plan of actions given by U.K
and China and USSR and Japan subsequent to which the plan of action of USSR
and Japan was sent to the secretary general for review. The action plan of USSR
focussed on achieving peace through dialogue and requested the USA to halt its
military operation, desert shield. although the plan of action was rejected by the
secretary general stating it being inadequate and indecisive.
The committee went on to further discuss the historical claim of Iraq on Kuwait
and particularly the borders of the states of Iraq and Kuwait. the delegation of
Egypt stated that the borders between the concerned states were definite but this
was denied by was Israel stating the Anglo ottoman agreement. in the further
discussions conducted, U.K supported Iraq’s historical claim on Kuwait but was
questioned on its stance by USSR who claimed that U.K had a history of
rejecting such a claim on its land and hence USSR found it ironic. this was
responded by U.K that any threats to its borders would be treated as an act of
aggression.
Upon the question of the legality of the Iraq’s claim on the land of Kuwait , it
was once mentioned that Kuwait had been annexed by Iraq and hence claim
must be deemed as lawful but other delegations provided the basis of lawful
administration in the concerned region for such claims and gave an example of
a dispute regarding a temple on the border of Thailand and Cambodia which
was ruled in the favour of Thailand because they had effective control over it .
It was also stated by China that the Iraqi government is not recognised by a lot
of countries and that their invasion has been the reason for the problems of the
people of Kuwait.
The committee is continuously trying to find a solution to the conditions
between Iraq and Kuwait and has seen various action plans regarding it. A
decisive and executive action plan is yet to arrive.
