PROBLEM

   03 – 0076:      The coupling of Fig. 1 is connected by two (1/2)-in. diameter

flange bolts (one on each side). Specifications for the bolts
require that the axial tensile stress not exceed 12.0 ksi and
the cross shearing stress not exceed 8.0 ksi. Determine the
maximum value of the coupling load P that can be applied
without exceeding either of the given requirements. Note:
The cross-sectional area of the bolts at the root of the
threads is 0.126 sq. in.

Solution:                    To find the maximum value of the coupling load P, first sketching
the free-body diagram of coupling at the connected section, Fig. (2), and
resolve the load P into components normal and tangent to the connected
plane:
N = P cos 30°
V = P sin 30°
Since N should not exceed the allowable axial tensile force, and V should
not exceed the allowable shearing force,
P cos 30° = N ≤ (12 × 0.126) × (2)
P sin 30° = V ≤ (8 × 0.126) × 2
P ≤ [(12 × 0.126 × 2) / (cos 30°)] = 3.49 ksi                       (1)
p ≤ [(8 × 0.126 × 2) / (sin 30°)] = 4.032 ksi                        (2)
The smaller value will control, so
Pallowable =  3.49 ksi.
