PROBLEM

   03 – 0079:      A rubber sleeve is attached by its internal surface to a steel

shaft. The sleeve outer surface is attached to the interior of a
tube (Fig. 1), to produce a flexible coupling for transmitting a
torque from shaft to tube through the rubber. Compute the
shear stress on a cylindrical surface in the rubber as a
function of the cylinder radius.

Solution:                    The shear stresses for a small arc of the rubber is shown in
                        Figure 2. Shear Force, Fs = τA = τ (2πr) L.
The torque is the force times the radius at which it is applied. The
torque applied by the shaft to the rubber is reacted to by the rubber with
equal torque.
Reactive torque in rubber
Tr = (Fs) r = τ (2πr2) L.                                                           (a)
Since the torque will be transmitted through the rubber to the tube,
Tr = T = 500 in.-lb                                                                 (b)
Substituting (a) into (b),
τ [(2πr2) (3")] = 500 in.-lb
τ = [(26.5) / (r2)] psi.
