INTRODUCTION
Christianity has the largest number of adherents around the world. The 2010
survey recorded at least 2.2 billion people belonging to Christianity, and this
number is projected to increase in the year 2020 by 6.9 billion – equivalent to 31% of
the total world population. You may be curious, what is so attractive and special
about Christianity that it grew an astonishing number of adherents? There are many
reasons as to why these billion people chose to be Christians, but one is sure – they
all believe in Jesus Christ.
This module will present the basics of Christianity – its origin, its growth, the
sources of its teachings, and prayers.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Jesus’ earthly story begins in the town of Bethlehem in the Roman province
of Judea. A threat to kill the infant king led Joseph to take his family to Egypt. When
they returned, God led them to settle in Nazareth in Galilee. At about age 30, Jesus
was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist and was tempted by Satan in
the Judean desert. Jesus set up his base of operations in Capernaum and from
there ministered throughout Israel, telling parables, teaching about the kingdom,
and healing the sick. He traveled to the region of the Gadarenes around Gadara
and healed two demon-possessed men. Fed over 5,000 people with five loaves
and two fish on the shores of Galilee near Bethsaida. Healed the sick in

Gennesaret; ministered to the Gentiles in Tyre and Sidon; visited Caesaria Philippi,
where Peter declared him to be the Messiah; and taught in Perea, east of the
Jordan. As he set out on his last visit to Jerusalem, he told the disciples what would
happen to him there. He spent some time in Jericho and then stayed in Bethany at
night as he went back to Jerusalem during his last week. In Jerusalem he would be
crucified, but he would rise again.
The Sermon on the Mount: The Beatitudes and the Our Father.
The Sermon on the Mount is considered as the longest account of Jesus’ teachings.
It started with the message on “Beatitudes.” Through this sermon, Jesus told his
disciples and the people of the value of the living well. This is another proof of how
Jesus viewed things differently in terms of ideas, views, and beliefs. The sermon talks
about the kingdom of God. (Read Matthew 1: 3-12).
ACTIVITY 1
DIRECTIONS: after reading Matthew 1: 3-12. Each one will write a reflection on
