Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of doing part-time

jobs when being full-time students.

It is common nowdays for students to opt for part-time jobs when attending
universities and colleges. In my opinion, this phenomenon has both advantages and
disadvantages.

The first obvious advantage is that work can bring money. In many countries,
students aren't independent and self-reliant while their families do not have stable
finance to afford their accommodation and education. Therefore, if they can
undertake a part-time job, they can minimize the burden of finance and have extra
money to pay for some personal needs. It may be an essential factor in permitting
study in the first place. For example, in Britain, the education fees have been
rapidly increasing in recent years which have a profound negative effect on
students ands their parents. So, if they want to continue their pursuit of study, they
have no choice but to work their way through school.

Moreover, a part-time job can help provide students with real-life experiences, a
step out of the ivory tower. Many companies and employers complain that
numerous new bachelors neither meet the business needs, nor can apply their
theoretical study into practice. However, some work experiece gained during
students' study can facilitate one to develop their career. My own experience is
good case in point. Thanks to pedagogical skills I have acquired when doing part-
time jobs as teaching assistants and tutor in English, I was easily able to impart
knowlege on students quickly as a full-time teacher after graduation.

However, it should be borne in mind that the primary purpose of university is to

concentrating on study, completing all the assigned assignments and exams. If a
person also works, they may unable to devote themselves sufficiently to their
study, leading to the unexpected learning outcomes. Many universities have seen
an alarming rate of students are failing to meet their requirements in attendance,
performance, or assignments and exams. It seems likely that students those also
work while studying will have greater possibility to fail their exams, with terrible
consequences in the long run.

In conclusion, in my opinion, the decision of whether taking up part-time jobs or

not depends on individual students' circumstances. It may be beneficial or
financially neccessary, but it should never be at the cost of underachiving academic
work.
