National Learning Project

Recently the government announced a major new initiative to help raise
standards of reading and writing in primary schools.  This involves schools
from different areas of the country working to a common programme. This
programme has designed to raise expectations and improve children’s
learning skills.  With the agreement of the governors, our school is involved
in the project from the beginning of this term.  We have set targets for
improving our pupil’s standards and our progress towards these will be
reviewed with the governors at the end of each school year.

All classes have started work on the programme already and we plan to
develop the work throughout the year.  The pattern of learning will now be
taking a different form.  Most of the work will be done during a daily
timetabled   “learning hour”.  In this time, your child will be involved in
reading tasks with the whole class and in-groups to develop his/her
accuracy and fluency.  Teachers will give careful attention to teaching
phonics, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and handwriting.  Linked to this,
children will receive support to help them write clearly and accurately.

Each half term, the teacher will set your child two targets, one for reading
and one for writing.  So that you know what your child should be aiming for
and can help with additional support at home, we will talk to you about your
child’s targets during our parent’s meetings. We are very keen to involve
you in this work!  Please continue to support your child with the reading
books taken home and attending our parent’s meetings.

The project will involve all schools in the local authority over a five-year
period.  We are confident that this will help to improve your child’s
performance.  Please ask about the project.  Teachers will be happy to
discuss the programme with you and explain the kinds of work your child
will be involved in during the year.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school for further information.
