Determination of Acid value of coconut oil

Aim: - To determine the acid value of given Coconut oil using 0.1N KOH Solution.
Apparatus required: - 50 ml burette, burette stand, 250 ml conical flask, Water bath, tripod
stand, etc.
Chemicals required: - 0.1N KOH solution, Neutral ethyl alcohol-20ml, Phenolphthalein
indicator, Coconut oil-5gm.
Principle: - The acid value of oil is defined as “the number of milligrams of KOH required to
neutralize the free acid present in 1 gram of the oil"
C17H35COOH + KOH  C17H35COOK + H2O
Acid of oil (Potassium stearate)
(Stearic acid)

Procedure: -
 Fill the burette with standard 0.1 N KOH Solution after rinsing it with the same, and
set it to a stand.
 Weigh out accurately about 5 gm of given coconut oil into a clean and dry 250 ml
conical flask and add 20ml of neutral ethyl alcohol.
 Heat the flask over a water bath for about 15 minutes at 70-80°C
 Cool the flask at room temperature and add few drops (1 ml) of Phenolphthalein
indicator.
 Titrate above solution against 0.1 N KOH Solution taken in burette.
 During titration, the solution turns from colourless to pink shows end point.
 Stop addition of KOH and note down the burette reading.
 Repeat the titration to get concurrent values.
Calculations: -
