HOW CULTURE DRIVES BEHAVIORS – JULIEN BOURRELLE

BRUSSELS

NORWAY (EUROPE) – SOCIALIZATION TAKES PART ON A MUCH A MORE FRAMED AND ORGANIZED
MANNER

3 WAYS TO RELATE IN A CULTURE

CONFRONT – YOUR BEHAVIORS ARE RIGHT BEHAVIORS

COMPLAIN – ISOLATE AND SEGREGATE YOURSELF IN SOCIAL BUBBLES

CONFORM – ADAPTING YOUR OWN TO FIT IN THE BEHAVIOR OF THE SOCIETY YOU ARE IN – BENEFIT
FROM DIVERSITY, OBSERVING, LEARNING UNDERSTANDING

NOT GETTING THE EMOTIONAL FEEDBACK YOU ARE USED TO

SEEING EMOTIONAL FEEDBACK AND THE WORLD IN OWN CULTURAL GLASSES – DIFFERENT
INTERPRETATIONS – SHAPES OUR REALITY

CHANGING LENS ALSO MEANS CHANGING YOUR WAY PERCEIVE BEHAVIOR AND HOW PEOPLE RELATE
TO CULTURAL DIFFERENCES (WILL LEAD TO BENEFIT IN SOCIETY)

EQUALITY OF RESULT – NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BENEFIT IN FULL POTENTIAL BUT RESULTS TO
BALANCE IN SCIETY AND ENFORCED

BOARDS WITH DIFFERENT CULTURAL COMPOSITION WILL PERFORM BETTER THAN THOSE COMPOSED
WITH ONLY 1 CULTURE – INCREASES PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY, CREATIVITY, INNOVATION

BUT WITH THE CHALLENGE: COMMUNICATE WELL TOGETHER

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES –

MOST ARE RAISED WITH THE IDEA TO CONTRIBUTE TO A GROUP - AFFECTS THE WAY PEOPLE BEHAVE

BLINDESS IN CULTURAL GLASSES – YOU WILL THINK THAT PEOPLE ARE REJECTING YOU

UNCOMFORTABLENESS AND DISTANCE – HINDERED BY CULTURAL DIFFFERENCES

POLITENESS – NORMS THAT ARE USUALLY CULTURALLY RELATED

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE BUT WHAT YOU PERCIEVE BENEFIT FROM DIVERSITY
CULTURAL LENSES:

In the Tedtalk of Julien Bourrelle entitled how culture drives behaviors, he mentioned that conforming
or adapting to the behavior and norms of other culture emphasizes our openness to relate and
understand them. And in the sense of cultural lens where we see how different each culture is from
each other, and having an open and clear view, about it shapes our reality that we should be accepting
as it will help us build better communication with others becomes better and that our perception must
be with understanding that we are different and that our practices which are different from them, is
okay and should be understood. having a blind cultural lens and limited understanding towards
differences in feedback whether emotional or physical, will create a deeper gap between each other.
and by changing our lens also means changing way perceive behavior and how people relate to cultural
differences, in simple terms, acceptance. and will lead to benefit in society)

SOCIAL ORIENTATION:

According to the article How East and West think in profoundly in different ways David Robson. Our
"social orientation" affect how we think and reason. People in more collectivist societies or goal oriented
as a group and not individually, they tend to think about problems in a more "holistic" way, paying more
attention to the relationships and context of the situation at hand. People in more individualistic
societies, on the other hand, tend to focus on separate parts and see situations as fixed and unchanging.
So, it is upon the differences in priorities that creates a gap and tension towards the cultural difference
but with regards to Bourrelle that boards with different cultural composition perform better than those
composed with only 1 culture – leads to a benefit of increased problem-solving ability, creativity,
innovation. It highlights that if you are open in accepting different cultures, then it may benefit you and
other members of the society.

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES:

In our global society, we are mixed up of different ethnicity and race, that most certainly determines our
practices of culture, behaviors, norms, beliefs, and expressions. And in our modern society, it is
inevitable to be meet people with different cultures and practices for example in our school and
especially when we travel whether local or international. And with difference in culture, it is hard to
relate and according to bourelle we can only either confront that our behavior is the right behavior,
complain and isolate oneself in social bubbles or conform and be able to. adapt our own fit to the
behavior of the society we belong and would reward benefits of diversity, observing, learning
understanding. In this idea, shows how we can only either reject or accept the differences. CULTURAL
DIFFERENCES IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE BUT WHAT YOU PERCIEVE BENEFIT FROM DIVERSITY, which talks
about our openness in accepting or conforming.

CONCLUSION:

Cultural differences exist in society, and openness in perception would result in better communication of
people. the bottom line of the three main ideas is that we should be open to accepting and conforming
cultural differences, having a clear look in cultural lenses will allow us to see clearly how our social
orientation and having different and multiple cultures working together would lead to a benefit of better
communication, understanding, and have new knowledge about cultures and how with our connection
and communication, the uniqueness of culture is still present with our openness to differences.
