Story

Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a donkey.


The people waved palm branches,
And made a path with their clothes and shouted, “Hosanna!”
At a special Passover celebration Jesus washed the disciples’ feet.
“This was the job of a servant, not the king of kings,” the disciples thought.
But Jesus came to serve, not to be served.
He tells us to serve like He did.
Then, they had a meal together and afterward went to a garden to pray.
Jesus asked God to help Him do the right thing,
even though it was going to be very hard.

Leaf Sensory Play
This is such a wonderful sensory activity and a great basic science introduction for little ones!

Materials needed:
Leaves from outside. storage tub or Plastic zip bag. Water. (optional)

Preparation:
None.

Steps:
For Babies and Toddlers:
Go on a walk outdoors and gather some leaves
together.

Babies:
Allow them to explore the outdoor leaves in a
plastic zip bag.

Toddlers:
Allow them to explore the leaves in a tub.
Some ways they may explore are by tearing the leaves off the stem, smelling the leaves, pouring water on the leaves,
washing the leaves, and smashing the leaves.
Talk about what they observe as they explore the leaves. How do they smell? How do they feel? How have they
changed?

Wave the leaves around and shout, “Hosanna!”


Remind them that people waved leaves to welcome Jesus in our story from the Bible today.
You may also want to teach them this rhyme, “The Bible is God’s Word for you, you can trust that it’s right and true.”

Find and Match the Items
Here is a great activity for sensory play and discovery as children search for hidden items in a storage tub of balls,
leaves, dried beans, or whatever you have on hand.

Materials needed:
A storage tub or box. Medium of choice. Paper images.

Preparation:
Fill a tub or box with materials.

For Babies and Toddlers:


Sit the child next to the tub.
Allow the child to search inside for the images.
When an image is found, have them match it on the
paper.
Encourage them by saying, “Great job. You’ve found
a palm branch.”

Toddlers:
Add non-story items into the mix. For example, a toy train, a bus and so on.
Have the child sort the story items from the non-story items.

Feet Washing Sensory Bag
This is an engaging activity to talk about the Bible story while keeping little hands active.

Skills learned:

Decision making
Fine Motor creativity
skills

Materials needed:
Coloring sheet. Coloring supplies of choice. Small plastic zip bag. Water. Soap. Tape.

Preparation:
Gather materials.

Toddlers:
Ask your child to help you color the picture as you
discuss what is happening in the picture.
Encourage them to repeat words like feet, wash,
water, towel, Jesus, disciple, servant, king, serve.
Put a small amount of soap and water in the bag.
Seal and tape closed.
Act out washing the disciple’s feet together.

You may discuss how Jesus said, “Now that I have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.” John
13:14
Take turns washing each other’s feet with the water bag.

Feet Washing
Here is a great activity for sensory play and discovery as children act out Jesus washing the disciple’s feet.

Materials needed:
2 bowls. Water. Dirt or sand. Washcloth. Towel.

Preparation:
Gather materials.

For Babies and Toddlers:


This activity may be done outdoors or in the bathtub.
Dirty their feet with the dirt or sand.
Wash their feet in the bowl of water.
If they have siblings, allow them to take turns washing each other’s feet.
Dry their feet with the towel.

As you wash their feet, talk about how the dirt is like our sin and the water is
like Jesus.
He is the only One that washes us clean of our sins.
Jesus was showing His followers that He is willing to serve them even though
He is our King.
He told us to act like Him and to serve others too.

Jesus said, “Now that I have washed your feet, you also should wash one
another's feet.” John 13:14

I Spy Sensory Bottle
This is another great activity for sensory play and discovery as children search for hidden items in an I Spy bottle.

Skills learned:

Materials needed:
Recycled plastic bottle. Breadcrumbs.
Story images and checklist. Other
miscellaneous objects. Tape or glue.

Preparation:
Fill the bottle with breadcrumbs, story
images and items. Glue or tape closed.

For Babies and Toddlers:


Allow the child to explore the bottle by
shaking, twisting, tapping, or rolling the
bottle on the ground.
Show them that there are hidden objects
inside.

Toddlers:
Ask them if they can find some images on the checklist.
When an image is found, have them find it on the checklist and mark it off the list.

When they find something you can say, “Great job. You’ve found a *magnifying glass* Was there a *magnifying
glass* in our Bible story today? *No, that’s silly* Let’s find some things from our Bible story.”
When they find the story images, briefly go over each piece of the story they find.
