The andean condor in danger of extinction
Current status of the Andean Condor For thousands of years, the Andean condor was a sacred and honored animal by the native peoples of Latin America, and fortunately today it is in various regions. However, due to several causes its population has been decreasing, you knew that in Chile and Argentina it has been extinct in several areas of the Atlantic coast for decades. Currently, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, the current population trend is still decreasing.
Causes of the danger of extinction of the Andean Condor
A natural cause that makes it a bit difficult for this species to recover faster is that its production is very slow. Most condors do not reproduce for the first time until they are 10 years old, plus each pair only has one calf every 2 years. Decrease and pollution of its habitat is another important cause for which this species suffers losses. In the Andean region that you occupy several countries, deforestation, air pollution and water pollution have increased in recent decades. Hunting as a trophy something that is obviously illegal and which fortunately is not currently the most common reason for possible extinction.
Characteristics of the Andean Condor
It lives in the Andean region from Venezuela and Colombia to Chile and Argentina, nests in the mountains and always in steep areas. It is the largest flying bird in the world, it can weigh more than 10 kilos and measure a metre tall. It is a scavenger, it feeds on dead animals so its role is very important because it eliminates remains and possible sources of infection. Its plumage is black and white, but the most striking parts are its white collar-shaped necklace.
What happens if the condor becomes extinct?
The ecosystems in which it is often found would become unbalanced and there would be more carrion build-up, which is a major source of infection, so many living things would get sick and also lose some of their food sources. In addition, their few predators would have one less prey to feed on, which would greatly reduce the population of other species they usuall How can we help the condor? We can help educate people to eliminate the belief that their cattle are being attacked. To make known the importance of their ecological role and also the importance in the ancestral culture of many native peoples of the areas inhabited by these birds such as Peru. We can support conservation programmes of the species financially or voluntarily.
