Overview of Druzhba Pipes

The Druzhba Pipeline (Russian: also referred to as the Friendship Pipeline and
Comecon Pipeline) is the world's longest oil pipeline and one of the largest oil
pipelines in the world. It carries oil about 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) from
eastern European Russia to points in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia,
the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. [1] The network also branches into
various pipelines to deliver its products throughout Eastern Europe and beyond.
The name "Druzhba" means "friendship", in reference to the fact that the pipeline
supplied oil to the energy-hungry western regions of the Soviet Union, to "fraternal
socialist allies" in the former Soviet bloc, and to western Europe. Today, it is the
largest major artery for transportation of Russian (and Kazakh) oil throughout
Europe.
