LEAGUE CHANGES IN 2022-2023

Outgoing Member: Michael Sly

Incoming Member: Joel Weigle

For the second time, our league has been tossed aside like a two dollar whore by on again off again
league member Michael Sly. Replacing him is Joel Weigle, from the deep mid-south of Little Rock,
Arkansas (and currently west Texas). Don’t be fooled by his light southern drawl and boyish demeanor,
he’s 100% locked and loaded to come out fighting and finish at a respectable 9th place. WELCOME JOEL!

a 60% vote.
1.3.1. A maximum of 3 votes for rule or format changes may occur per year. All votes must
occur before the draft, preferably at least one (1) week before the draft date.
1.3.2. Any member of the league can propose a rule or topic to be voted on to the
commissioners. The commissioners have final selection over what topics may be voted on
for the upcoming year.
1.3.3. If a vote ends in a tie, the proposal does not pass.
2. Draft
2.1. The current draft style is a serpentine draft.
2.1.1.Draft style can be changed with an 80% vote.
2.2. Draft order is selected at random through a random number generator.
2.2.1. Other draft order methods have been used in the past, such as a poker tournament. These
must be agreed to with a 100% vote.
2.3. Each team will have roughly 90 seconds to make each of their selections.
2.3.1. No time clock will be kept, but a verbal “CLOCK” can be called by any player on any other
player during their pick.
2.3.2. If “CLOCK” is called, the player with have 30 seconds to make their pick.
2.3.2.1.If they are unable to make their pick, their draft position is yielded. The next player
up in draft position can make their pick immediately from the remaining pool of

Revision 9
10/2/22

3.1.2.1. This was expanded from 13 in the 2020 season.

3.1.3.Roster size can be changed, but must be passed with a 60% vote.
3.1.4. Roster configuration could be changed, but must be passed with 60% vote
3.1.5. There is currently no maximum or minimum for positions played per week. This could be
changed with a 60% vote.
3.1.6. Daily Roster Lock
3.1.6.1.Rosters lock universally for the whole league at the first minute of the first game of a
given day.
3.1.6.1.1. For example, if the first game on 10/31 starts at 4:00 PM, all rosters lock
at 4:00 PM, even those that have no player starting at that time.
3.1.6.1.2. Starting line-ups CAN still be changed after roster locks and will reflect
for that day, unless the player who is starting has already played.
3.1.6.2.Player acquisitions and trades can be made that day, but they will not be
reflected on team rosters until the following day.
3.1.6.3.If a player is set in a team’s starting line-up at the start of their game, that player
counts as a game played (GP) for that week UNLESS:
3.1.6.3.1. The player plays 0 minutes and 0 seconds of game time.
3.1.6.3.2. If the player plays even 1 second of the game, it will count as a game
played for that week. (The Kris Dunn Rule)
4. In-season Transactions & Waivers
4.1. Player acquisitions (adds, drops)
4.1.1. Limits: There are no in-season acquisition limits for total adds, drops, or trades throughout
the season. However, there are certain restrictions to add, drops, and trades (see sec 4.2)
4.1.2. Free agent players are continuously on waiver. Waivers run once per day, the time waivers
runs depends on day of the week and/or holiday (see 4.3 waivers)
4.2. Acquisition restrictions
4.2.1. After the conclusion of the regular season, adds, drops and trades are not allowed for any
team eliminated from championship contention.
4.2.1.1. No exceptions to this rule. At the conclusion of the regular season, if your team is
no longer eligible to win the championship, you may no longer add, drop, or trade.
4.3. Waivers
4.3.1. The waiver system is a free agent auction bid system (FAAB).
4.3.1.1. On weekdays (M-F) the waivers will run at 3 PM PST.
4.3.1.2. On weekends (Sat-Sun) waivers will at 9 AM PST.
4.3.1.3. EXCEPTION: On certain holidays where games start before 4 PM PST (MLK day,
Christmas, etc), waivers will be set to 9 AM.
4.3.2. At the beginning of the season, each team is allocated $200 FAAB dollars.
4.3.2.1.These dollars are not transferrable, trade-able, and do NOT roll over to the
following season. Any unused FAAB dollars are lost.
4.3.3. All free agents will be locked and only addable through the following processes:
4.3.3.1.FAAB Bidding: Every night Monday through Sunday, team owners can bid on any
player in the free agent pool. The player will be added to the team who submits the
highest bid.
4.3.3.1.1. In the event of a tie, the player will be added to the team who is higher
on the waiver priority list.
4.3.3.1.2. The priority list is a reverse-order priority system. At the beginning of
each season the waiver order is set by the reverse of the draft order.
4.3.3.1.3. At the start of each subsequent week, the priority list will be set be
Revision 9
10/2/22

reverse order of standings.

4.3.3.1.4. If a player uses their waiver claim, they are sent to the bottom of the
priority list and deducted any FAAB used.
4.3.3.1.5. Zero dollar bids are allowed.
4.3.3.2.League Manager (LM) adds: Players can be added to a team through league
manager add on Saturday and Sundays only and only if the following conditions
have been met:
4.3.3.2.1. The player being LM added must not have been dropped the night
before. As in, there must have been at least one night of FAAB bidding that
the player went through without receiving a bid.
4.3.3.2.2. The LM add must be announced publicly in league group chat. NO
EXCEPTIONS for phone calls, personal conversations, etc.
4.3.3.2.3. The team requesting the LM add must either have a free roster spot
already, or drop a player from their team to make space.
4.3.3.2.4. The LM add must be requested before the first game starts of that
particular Saturday or Sunday.
4.3.3.2.5. If all above conditions are met and the LM is not available, or is unable
to add the requested player before games lock, the player will be assumed to
be starting for the requesting team, and all points scored (even if points scored
are 0 or negative) will be added to the requested teams total at the end of the
day. Then the player will be added for the following scoring period.
4.3.4. The waiver system can be changed by a 60% vote.
4.4. Trades
4.4.1. There is no limit to the amount of trades a team can make.
4.3.2.There is no trade review period or league trade vote.
4.3.2.1. A trade can only be vetoed if it is voted upon and all other teams agree that the
trade must be reversed. In a normal 10 team league, all 8 other teams must agree
to veto the trade or the trade stands.
4.3.3. There is no trade deadline, except when the ELIMINATED TEAM exception applies.
4.3.3.1.ELIMINATED TEAMS: If a team has been eliminated from playoffs, that team
can only make trades with other teams who have also been eliminated from
playoffs.
4.3.3.2. NOTE: Due to the Play-in rules, the earliest any team may be eliminated from playoffs
is at the conclusion of Play-in Week 1 (Week 18 of the season).
4.3.3.3. Both teams involved in the trade are not required to be eliminated for the trade to be
invalid. If one team is eliminated, the trade is not allowed.
4.3.3.4. Conversely, only teams eligible for playoffs can make trades with one another.
4.4. Transaction Pot: If a team does not pay their transaction fees by the conclusion of Week 19, the
team could face expulsion from the league. (CURRENTLY DOES NOT APPLY)
4.4.1. Potentially, a Transaction Buy-in could be added to the league fees. This would basically
be a pre-pay for transaction fees throughout the year. Any money spent under the
Transaction Buy-In would be returned to the team. Any amount spent over the
Transaction Buy-In would be owned by the team at the conclusion of Week 19.
5. Regular Season Schedule, Game Limits, and Matchups
5.1. The regular season begins on the first day of the NBA schedule and runs for 19 weeks.
5.1.1. Each team plays eight other teams exactly twice, and one random team thrice.
5.1.2. At the start of each season, the LM will randomly reset the league schedule.
5.2. Matchups: The first day of every fantasy matchup is Monday, the last day is the following
Revision 9
10/2/22

Sunday with ONE exception:

5.2.1. During the week of the All-Star Game (usually mid-February), the fantasy week begins on
that Monday and ends two Sundays later.
5.2.1.1. There are typically 8 to 9 days of NBA schedule during this 14 day fantasy week.
5.2.1.2. The formula to determine the game limit for the All-Star Game week is:
5.2.1.2.1. [(Current game limit) / 7] x (Number of days with NBA games)
5.2.1.2.2. For example [30 / 7 ] x 8 = 34.3 = 34 games
5.2.1.2.3. Always round to the nearest whole number.
5.2.2. The winner of each matchup is the team that has the most total fantasy points scored
after the final calendar day of the matchup, minus any deductions (see Game Limits).
5.2.2.1.In the event of a tie, the winner of the matchup will be the team with the most
fantasy points scored on the season.
5.3. Game Limits: 30 games per week
5.4. If a team plays less than 30 games per week (or the current game limit).
5.4.1. The offending team is ineligible for the highest points scored bonus the following week.
5.5. If a team plays more than 30 games per week (or the current game limit)
5.5.1. The highest scoring game(s) from the last day in which that team played games are
deducted from that team’s total point scoring until the total number of games played
equals the current game limit.
5.5.1.1.Example: Team A plays 32 games in a week and scores 990 points. On the last day
of the week their three highest scoring games are 50, 40, and 35. Team A’s final
score is 990 – (50+40) = 900 points.
5.5.1.2.The offending team is ineligible for the highest points scored bonus the
following week.
6. Playoffs
6.1. In a standard year, the Playoffs begin after the conclusion of Week 19.
6.2. The Playoffs consist of two, two-week rounds for a total of four (4) weeks.
6.3. A total of four teams make the playoffs.
6.4. Playoff eligibility:
6.4.1. The teams with the top 4 regular season records make the playoffs, with ONE EXCEPTION:
6.4.1.1.A team with a lower regular season record than 4th place can make the playoffs by
way of the PLAY-IN WEEKS. (See: Play In-Weeks)
6.4.2. Tie-breaker: The tie-breaker for two teams with the same regular season record is always
total fantasy points scored (PF). The team with the higher PF gets the higher seed.
6.4.2.1.If the teams have the exact same amount of PF, then the secondary tie-breaker is
the amount of pts scored by those teams during the final week of the regular
season.
6.5. The winner of each playoff matchup is the team that has the most total fantasy points scored
after the conclusion of the final scheduled day of the playoff matchup.
6.5.1. In the event of an exceedingly rare tie, the winner will be the team with the most total
fantasy points scored on the season, including any previous playoff matchups.
6.6. RIGHT OF SEED DEFERRAL
6.6.1. The winner of the 1st seed has the right to change their first-round matchup by deferring
their seed.
6.6.2. IF the 1st seeds decides to enact their RIGHT OF SEED DEFERRAL the following must occur:
6.6.2.1. The 1st seed must announce publicly their decision to DEFER their seed.
6.6.2.1.1. If unable to do so, the 1st seed must contact the commissioner or co-
commissioner who will publicly announce the decision.
Revision 9
10/2/22

6.6.2.2.The 1st seed must give up 75% of their 1st seed winnings (See: Fees, Winnings and
Payout for more details).
6.6.2.3. The 2nd seed is awarded 75% of the 1st seed winnings.
6.6.2.4.The 1st seed must choose to play either the 2nd or the 3rd seed, instead of playing the
4th seed. The remaining two seeds then play each other. (2 vs 4 or 3 vs 4)
6.6.2.5.The new seeding must be set by the commissioner immediately and cannot be
reversed for any reason once deferral is enacted.
7. Play-In Weeks (Weeks 18 and Weeks 19)
7.1. Week 18 Play-In
7.1.1. Week 18 is the designated Play-in Week for the following teams as seeded at the
conclusion of week 17.
7.1.1.1. 6th
7.1.1.2. 7th
7.1.1.3. 8th
7.1.1.4. 9th
7.1.1.5. 10th
7.1.1.6.Of the above teams, the team which posts the highest total score during week 18
will become eligible for participation in the Week 19 Play-In. See below.
7.2. Week 19 Play-In
7.2.1. Week 19 is the designated Play-in Week for the following teams as seeded at the
conclusion of week 18.
7.2.1.1. 4th
7.2.1.2. 5th
7.2.1.3. Winner of Week 18 Play-In (see above)
7.2.1.4.Of the above eligible teams, the team which posts the highest total score
during Week 19 will earn the 4th seed in the Playoffs.
7.2.2. NOTES AND EXCEPTIONS:
7.2.3. 4th SEED ADVANTAGE: The team who owns the 4th seed at the start of Week 18 will earn
the one-time advantage to play a maximum of 31 games during the Week 19 Play-In. All
other teams eligible for the Week 19 Play-In must only play a maximum of 30 games.
7.2.3.1.The 4th seed’s 31st game must be announced publicly by tip-off of the first game of
the final day of the Week 19, or this one-time advantage will be lost.
7.2.4. NOTE: If after the conclusion of Week 18, a lower seed that did not win the Week 18 Play-
In moves into the 4th or 5th seed, they will be eligible for the Week 19 play in.
7.2.5. NOTE: If the team that won the Week 18 Play-In moves into the 4th or 5th seed after Week
18, there will effectively be only 2 teams playing-in for playoffs.
7.2.6. NOTE: If at the conclusion of Week 18 the 4th or 5th seed drops to the 6th seed or lower,
they will not be eligible for the Week 18 Play-In, and will effectively be eliminated from
play-off contention.
7.2.7. In effect, each of the eligible play-in teams are playing each other for a playoff spot,
regardless of their scheduled Week 19 matchup.
7.2.8. The outcome of the individual fantasy matchups for each eligible team does not apply to
final playoff seeding.
Revision 9
10/2/22

7.2.8.1.NOTE: This means that if the 4th seed during the Week 19 Play-In loses the play- in,
but wins their matchup and ultimately moves up into the 3rd seed, they are still
eliminated from play-off contention.
7.2.8.2.The only teams whose seeding may change due to the result of an individual
matchup during Week 19 are those teams seeded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the conclusion of
Week 18.
7.2.8.2.1. For Example, 1st place could lose their Week 19 matchup and fall to 2nd
or 3rd, and 2nd place could win and move to first.
7.2.8.3. For more questions on the PLAY-IN WEEK, contact your commissioners.
8. FEES, WINNINGS AND PAYOUT
8.1. ENTRY FEES: Each team pays the following fees:
8.1.1. $324 entry fee
8.1.2. $76 weekly bonus fee
8.1.3. Total fees = $400, unless the team requests to the commissioner to invoke the HALF
ENTRY FEE EXCEPTION.
8.1.3.1.HALF ENTRY FEE EXCEPTION: The Nerds League never wants to lose a member due
to high entry fees. For this reason, up to two teams can request to pay only half of
the normal entry fee.
8.1.3.2.The weekly bonus fee must be paid in full, meaning the total entry free would be
$162 + $75 = $237.
8.1.3.3.Any team that invokes the HALF ENTRY FEE EXCEPTION is only eligible to receive half
of the normal payout scheme.
8.1.3.4.The difference in money paid into the pot is deducted from 1st Place Champion
winnings.
8.1.3.4.1. For example, if two teams invoke the exception the 1st place winnings
are deducted by -$162 2 = -$324.
8.1.3.5.HALF PAYOUT: If a team that invokes the exception finishes the playoffs in 1st, 2nd,
or 3rd place they are only eligible to receive half of the original payout amount for
their position.
8.1.3.5.1. For example if Team A invokes the exception and finishes playoffs in 2nd
place, they are awarded $250 instead of $500. (See 8.4 PAYOUT)
8.1.3.5.2. The difference in winnings must be awarded to the 1st place champion.
8.1.3.6.If a team that invokes the exception wins the championship, the difference in
payout is awarded to the 2nd place winner, unless that team also invoked the
exception. In that case, the winnings would go to the 3rd place winner.
8.2. ALL FEES must be paid by the day of the draft or suffer possible expulsion from league
competition.
8.3. WEEKLY SCORING BONUS: The $76 weekly bonus fee goes into a pool that pays out $40 each
week to the highest total fantasy point scoring team for that week.
8.3.1. Exception: Any team that failed to make the game limit the prior week, is ineligible for the
weekly bonus for highest points scored.
8.3.1.1. This ineligibility can be raised, reduced, or eliminated by a 60% vote.
8.3.2.Payment will be made through Venmo to the top point scorer that week by the following
Monday of each week.
Revision 9
10/2/22

8.3.2.1.Venmo: Each competitor must have a Venmo account set up, unless they plan on
never being the top weekly scorer.
8.3.3. The total weekly scoring pot is $76 x 10 = $760. The total payout throughout the year is
$40 x 19 = $760.
8.4. PAYOUT: The $324 entry fee goes to the final Playoff Payout pot and First Seed Winnings (see
8.6). The total pot from initial buy-ins is $324x10 = $3240. The current payout scheme is:
8.4.1.1st Place Champion = $2500 (+ remainder of transaction fees, if any)
8.4.2.2nd Place Runner-Up = $500
8.4.3.3rd Place Runner-Up = $0
8.4.4.1st overall seed: $200
8.4.4.1. This payout scheme and entry fee can be changed by a 60% vote.
8.4.4.2. The remaining $40 from entry fees goes to the host of the draft to use to pay for
the draft board, trophy upgrades, food, and other amenities.
8.5. TRANSACTION FEES
8.5.1. The current transaction fees are as follows:
8.5.1.1. Trades = $0 per transaction
8.5.1.2. Free agent acquisitions = $0 per transaction (both changed in 2019-20)
8.5.1.2.1. These prices can be changed with a 60% vote.
8.6. FIRST SEED WINNINGS
8.6.1. The winner of the first overall seed by way of best regular season record (total PF breaks
all ties) will be awarded all the following:
8.6.1.1. $200
8.6.1.2. All transactions fees, if transaction fees are enacted.
8.6.2. First seed winnings must be paid out by the commissioner through Venmo by the following
Monday after the conclusion of the regular season.
8.6.3. First seed winnings are subject to the FIRST SEEDS RIGHT OF DEFERRAL. (See: 6.5 Right of
Seed Deferral for more info)
8.7. TROPHY
8.7.1. At the beginning of each season, the new champion is awarded The Nerds Fantasy
Basketball League Trophy.
8.7.1.1.The champion may request to receive the trophy at the conclusion of playoffs, but
typically it is awarded at the draft. This must be agreed upon between the
outgoing and incoming champion.
8.7.1.2.The champion is permitted a 5 minute glory speech where they shun all of their
non-believers and pledge to repeat their epic championship once again.
8.7.2. During the summer, the commissioner must add the new champion’s plaque, featuring the
champion’s name and team name, to the trophy.
9. SCORING
9.1. The Nerds Fantasy Basketball League scoring is based on years of experience, data analysis, and
careful configuration.
9.2. The scoring system is intended to weight all parts of player statistics including scoring,
efficiency, defense, playmaking, rebounding, and shooting.
9.3. A scoring change can be proposed by any member of the league, but must be passed by a 60%
vote. This vote must occur before the draft. Preferably at least a week before.
9.3.1.Absolutely no scoring changes can occur during the season.
Revision 9
10/2/22

9.4. Scoring can be added and removed. For example, there are currently no points scored for
offensive rebounds. This could be added in the future.
9.5. Only two scoring changes may occur each year.
9.6. SCORING CHANGE HISTORY LOG
9.6.1.2018-2019: enacted
9.6.1.1. Changing STLS/BLKS from 1.5 pts to 2.0 pts
