GUIDE FOR APPLYING FOR MASTER’S IN SWEDEN

By Mobolaji Folorunso

1
In Sweden, Master’s applications to all universities are made on a single website
(universityadmissions.se), you don’t send applications to individual universities. On this
website, you can select a maximum of 4 Master’s programmes in the same university or
different universities.

You can select the Master’s programmes you’re interested in as soon as the application
opens and submit the supporting documents later, but before the deadline of the
application.

The following screenshots describe what you’ll see when you apply for Master’s in
Sweden. Please, note that these screenshots were taken during the 2018 Autumn
Master’s application round, so there may be one or two updates to what you’ll see in the
next Master’s application. The next Autumn application round will likely start in October,
2019.

STEP 1
Visit universityadmissions.se and this is the first page you see.

2
STEP 2
Search for available Master’s programmes in the Autumn 2020 application round by
clicking on any of the three black boxes at the top of the page.

Click on “All Swedish universities” to narrow down your search to any particular
university.

STEP 3
Click on the middle black box and select “Autumn 2020” because that is the admission
round you’ll be applying in, and it starts in October 2019.

3
STEP 4
In the third black box, select “All programmes”.

4
STEP 5
In the green search field, type in the name of the Master’s programme you’re interested
in and a list of Master’s programmes that meet your search criteria are displayed, as
shown in the following screenshots.

Please, note that if you try to apply now, you might see “Application period not open”
written against a Master’s programme. Well, that’s because the next Master’s
application period is not yet open. Next Autumn Master’s application opens in October
2019.

5
STEP 6
Click on the “More information” drop-down link to see more information about any of
the Master’s programmes.

STEP 7
More information about the programme is revealed.

6
STEP 8
Click on the blue “Add” button on the Master’s programme to select it. Before “adding”
any Master’s programme, ensure that the number of credits for that programme is
either 60 credits or 120 credits. 60 credits indicates that the Master’s programme is for
1 year, while 120 credits indicates that the Master’s programme is for 2 years.

After “adding” the Master’s programme, it is reflected as one of your choices as shown
on the right pane of the page.

STEP 9
To “add” more Master’s programmes to your selection, simply search again for another
Master’s programme and click on the “Add” button against it.

7
STEP 10
All your selections will be listed on the right pane of the page. Click on the “To
application” button below those selections to continue to the next page of the
application.

8
STEP 11
The next page of the application is where you create an account on the application
portal. Click on the “Create account” link to do that.

STEP 12
The following page is revealed. Since you do not have a Swedish personal ID number,
click on the “NO, I don’t have a Swedish personal ID number” link.

9
STEP 13
The following page opens thereafter, where you enter your personal details to create an
account.

10
STEP 14
After filling in your details, click on the “Create an account” button to create your
account and the following page comes up. Don’t bother about the 15 Jan 2018 date seen
in the screenshot. This application was made in the last application round. You should
see a different date when you apply.

STEP 15
When you scroll down the page, you see your selection of Master’s programmes with
blue “Up” and “Down” arrows against each selection. You can use any of the arrows to
change the order of your selections. You can make the last selection your first choice
Master’s programme by clicking the “Up” arrow against it till it reaches the top.

You can also delete any of your selections by clicking on the red “X” button against each
selection.

11
STEP 16
Make sure you read and understand every instruction provided on the application
portal like the one shown below.

Click on the “Continue” button to continue the application process

12
STEP 17
After clicking on the “Continue” button, you’ll be taken to a page where you’ll need to
answer one or two question.

The first one is about whether you have international qualifications. This basically
means, if you studied outside Sweden, you should select the country where you studied
in. Note that it’s the country you “studied in” and not the country you’re from. You
could be from Nigeria, and studied for your Bachelor’s degree in Ghana, you’re to select
Ghana in the drop-down list because that’s where you studied.

13
STEP 18
The second question is about whether you are exempted from paying the application
fee of 900 SEK. Candidates who are citizens of countries in the European Union,
European Economic Area and Switzerland are exempted from paying the application
fee.

If you’re a citizen of a country from outside the EU, then, you have to pay the application
fee. In that case, you SHOULD NOT check the “Application fee” box.

After doing this, click on the “Submit” button. Note that you can still make changes to
your selected Master’s programmes after clicking the “Submit” button.

STEP 19
You’re thereafter taken to this page, confirming that your application has been
submitted. You can then start uploading your supporting documents as I’ll show you
how in subsequent screenshots.

14
STEP 20
Press the “Ok” button to move to the next page

15
STEP 21
The next page that opens is your personal page on the online application portal, where
you have different tabs at the top of the page: Application, Messages, Documents,
Profile, Application fee.

You’ll also find your application number at the top-left corner of the page, and the link
to change your choices of Master’s programmes or re-order them is just below your
application number.

STEP 22
Clicking on the “Messages” tabs reveals all messages you have received from the
universities you apply to. You should check your messages frequently because
universities will communicate with you about your application throughout the
application period.

16
STEP 23
To upload your supporting documents, click on the “Documents” tab, and you’ll be
taken to the page below.

Make sure you study the instructions very well. One important information you need to
take note of is that, once you upload a document, you can’t delete it. That has been the
case from previous applications, but I’m not sure if this will change for the next
application period.

What if you mistakenly upload a wrong document at first?

What to do is clearly explained in the instructions on the “Documents” page.

17
STEP 24
After going through the instructions and understanding them, click on the “Upload
documents” button to upload your documents.

Hmm. More instructions!

18
Yeah, they don’t make the application process complicated, the instructions simplify
everything for you. Follow them to the letter and you’re home and dry.

STEP 25
First, you’ll have to give a name to the document you want to upload. Make sure it
reflects the content of the document.

19
STEP 26
Select the type of document it is. Is it ID document (e.g. international passport),
certificate, or other documents. If ay of the categories does not fit the document you
want to upload (for example, CV, recommendation letter, etc.), just select “Other
documents”.

Then click on “Add to the list for upload”, and the document name shows up in the
“Files ready to upload” box.

After the document shows up in that box, click on “Continue” to upload it.

STEP 27
To pay your application, click on the “Application fee” tab at the top of the page.

On the page that shows up, you’ll find information about how to pay the application fee:
by credit card or by bank transfer.

20
If you have a bank ATM card with the Maestro, Visa or MasterCard logo, you can use the
“credit card” option to pay with it.

If you don’t have a card, you can otherwise pay by direct bank transfer.

Whew! *wipes sweat*

That seems like a lot, but, in reality, it’s not a lot. You can finish all these steps in 10
minutes. Yeah. 10 minutes.
