which we eat. Food is any solid or liquid which when consumed provides the body with energy to do
work, supplies materials for growth and repair of tissues and cells and maintains life. Foods contains
nutrients, which enables us to make energy, grow, develop and reproduce. There are six main
nutrients: protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fat and water. Protein builds and repairs the
body and takes care of muscles, bones, nerves, skin and blood. Some foods which are good sources
of protein are peas and beans, fish, milk and eggs. Carbohydrates is the body’s main source of
energy. This nutrient is present in foods such as bread, pasta, green bananas and rice. Vitamins are
helpful to our eyes, skin, hair and build our immune system which protect us from diseases. Fruits
and vegetables are rich sources of vitamins and minerals. Minerals are nutrients that help to build
strong bones and teeth and help our muscles to work. Fats is a nutrient that provides fuel for our
bodies, prevents loss of heat, helps with the absorption of some vitamins and cushions vital organs
of the body. Sources of Fats include oils, avocado, ackee, butter, fatty meats and mayonnaise. Water
is also an essential nutrient for our bodies. Did you know that water makes up 60-70% of the human
body weight? Water is needed to carry the other nutrients to our cells, help regulate body
temperature, aid digestion and help in the removal of waste. Hot and cold beverages, soups, fruits
and vegetables are all good sources of water. It is important for us to eat meals which contain all the
nutrients in the right amounts. This is known as a balanced diet. If any nutrient is missing from our
daily diet, this will result in under-nutrition and may cause certain diseases.
