This is a good question. Answer is quite simple. Before every flight, a Mass and
Balance sheet has to be completed and signed by the Pilot in Command. The use of
the balance sheet is to see whether all the Masses are well in limits. Also, pilots
need to know the Centre of Gravity of the airplane to adjust the aircraft trim
position.

The CG position has to remain in a fwd and aft limit set by the aircraft manufacturer
to get proper flight stability. For example, the more aft the CG is, the more unstable
the aircraft is, and the more forward it is the more the stability.

When the refueller (the fuel supplying company) fuels you up and comes to you
with papers to sign acknowledging receipt of fuel, he always writes down how many
litres (or gallons, in the US) are supplied to you. He also provides you with the
density of the fuel he has just sold you.

Once the fuel enters the airplane, however, all talk of fuel is in kilograms (or
pounds). This is because a very important component of airplane stability and
control is weight and center of gravity (CG).

I doubt U are right. Fuel uploaded is measured volumetrically- in terms of liters/

gallons. Fuel gauges in cockpit were calibrated in Kgs/ Pounds- gravimetrically.

Heat energy produced by fuel is proportional to its weight and not volume. And
weight changes for same volume. In USA, the density of ATF is 0.803. In India , it
seldom exceeds 0.78.

For same volume ( say 45000 ltrs), the energy produced by Indian fuel will be less
than energy produced by US fuel. Hence measurement by Kg is correct.

Aircraft fuel is measured in KGS because the total weight and balance of an aircraft
is calculated in kgs. If one element is measured in other scale there might be
confusion.

An airplane's weight is critical in determining whether or not the plane can generate
enough lift to go airborne at take-off. In addition to passengers and freight, the
weight fuel in the tanks is a significant consideration.

Also, the heat content of the fuel is consistent on a per pound basis, but not on a
per volume basis.

system?
Most modern aircraft use a capacitance type system. I know it sounds crazy, by
they actually apply a small electric charge to the fuel and the fuel itself acts as the
dielectric in a capacitor. By measuring the capacitance of the fuel, you can
accurately measure how much is left.

On small planes they can still use “float” type sending unit systems no different
than your car.

Some planes are even simpler in their fuel level indication. The U-2 has no
