ST.AGUSTINE: THE SELF HAS AN IMMORTAL SOUL

-A soul can’t live in this world without a body for it is considered as a unity of body and self. It is an
important element of man which governs and defines himself. We all know that we are created in the
image and likeness of God for we are geared towards the good.

ARISTOTLE: THE SOUL IS THE ESSENSE OF THE SELF

-For him, the body and soul are not two separate elements but is one thing. The soul is the essence of
the self but it can’t exist without the body.

PLATO: THE SELF IS AN IMMORTAL SOUL

-There are three part soul which are the following: Reason, physical appetite, and spirit or passion.
These three basically allow man to live in accordance to his nature, then he is giving justice in his
existence therefore everyone in this world has a purpose for each one of us should do our part. Always
remember that good is above God. A task is a task. No matter what happens, you should meet the
deadlines that are given to you. Practice yourself in doing what you can do now for time runs so fast
wherein you won’t notice it and this will definitely help you in your future work.

JOHN LOCKE: THE SELF IS CONCIOUSNESS

-For Locke, the essence of the self is its conscious awareness of itself as a thinking, reasoning, reflecting
identity. But this in no way means that this self is necessarily embedded in a single substance or soul—it
might very well take up residence in any number of substances or souls.

RENE DESCRATES: I THINK THEREFORE I AM

-For Rene Descartes suggests that there are two dimensions of the self: the self as a thinkingentity and
the self as a physical body. He also emphasized on the saying :I think therefore I am” which means that a
rational thinking person and being self conscious is the proof that there is a self.

IMMANUEL KANT: WE CONSTRUCT THE SELF

-For Immanuel Kant, the people are the ones to create their own self. The self constructsits own reality
which actively produces a world that is predictable to him/her.

GILBERT RYLE: THE SELF IS THE WAY PEOPLE HAVE

-Gilbert Ryle believes the self is best understood as a pattern of behavior, the tendency or dispostion of
a person to behave in a certain way in certain circumstances.

SOCRATES: LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING

-Through this statement, Socrates means that an unexamined human life is deprived of the meaning and
purpose of existence. To become fully human means to use our highly developed faculty of thought to
raise our existence above that of mere beasts. For if we don’t think, we are no more than animals,
simply eating, sleeping, working and procreating.
