Introduction
Notes for Engineers in charge of Trainin
The Second Engineer's role requires good ‘Man Management’ and ‘Communication’ skills along
with knowledge and experience. It is therefore important that Third Engineers are given the
‘opportunity to practice these skills.
‘On Gas Tankers the Second Engineer must be fully conversant with the Gas Engineer's job and
preferably have served as a Gas Engineer for some period.
The Training Log comprises of an introduction, eight sections of tasks and a verification sheet.
Each section having blank spaces where Senior Officers who feel additional tasks are beneficial or
prudent for vessel type, may enter these tasks. Should there be insufficient space, additional tasks
may be entered on the Additional / Miscellaneous Tasks sheet
Familliarization ~ \t is important that Engineers operate within a set of rules and maintain a high
level of discipline. This can be achieved by following Standing Orders and the Safety Management
System. It is also very important to be familiar with the surrounding machinery, safety equipment
and features.
Engineering Knowledge ~ This section aims to test this with respect to the areas under their
responsibility.
Technical Ability - This section aims to add further to the skills developed as a Fourth Engineer .
Operations and Shipboard Management — This is the largest section and aims to build up the
confidence of the Third Engineer in the day to day management and communication requirements.
Legal & Statutory Requirements ~ This section introduces the Third Engineer to some of the rules
and regulations under which the vessel must operate.
Paperwork — It has now become a very important aspect in the operation of the Vessel that the
required paperwork is completed after the work has been carried out and adequate records are
maintained. With the introduction of ISM, Vessels are required to have valid Safety Management
Certificates onboard, the failure to qualify for this will stop the vessel trading in exactly the same
manner as a Main Engine failure.
Additional Miscellaneous ~ Senior Officers are encouraged to enter additional tasks in this section.
History - This section should list any involvement in major repairs, major overhauls, dry-dockings
and extraordinary events. The completion of this section will help to judge experience gained. If
this section is fully completed, additional sheets may be inserted.& Anglo-Eastern Group

Guidance Notes for Completion of Training Lo:
Until ability is proven all ‘On the Job Training’ must be supervised.
For the task to be completed Satisfactorily, it must be carried out unaided, showing
excellent Safety Awareness.
Tasks applicable to Tankers are marked (T).
‘Some tasks may not be applicable to certain types of vessels
Establish a ‘Portfolio’ where all evidence and proof required for certain tasks is filed.
Previous Training Logs should be kept and attached to this Training Log along with
Portfolio.
