AKEELAH AND THE BEE

Introduction:

AKEELAH, an 11-year old girl living in south Los Angeles, discovers that she is talented
in competing spelling bee, in which she hopes that it will take her to the National
Spelling Bee. Despite her mother’s objections, Akeelah doesn’t give up on her goal, she
find help in the form of mysterious teacher, and along with overwhelming support from
her community. Akeelah might have for what it takes but his dream will come true.

Body:

Akeelah Anderson is an African American student from the Crenshan neighborhood of


South Los Angeles, struggles to overcome the limitations of her environment in order to
succeed in the National Spelling Bee competition. As I observe that Akeelah and the Bee
were first wanted to look at the themes the film presents. The father of Akeelah is died
but the situation is not like others, while her mother doesn’t really pay attention due to
her job, but one of his brother was a military, the other brother of her, hangs out with
the wrong crowd and her sister is a teen mom but later, Akeelah discovered that she has
a strong talent in spelling in which led by the principal Welch, and already feel isolated
from many about her school and it because of being perceived as a “brainiac” feel that
participating in such as will make her feel even more isolated. But her joy in learning
new word gets her started in the process. After Akeelah winning the school spelling bee,
she meets a boyfriend named Javier Mendez, a competitor at the Los Angeles district
where most of the competitors come from primarily, while middle class to wealthy
families. Akeelah learns about the nature of spelling bee in life according on its good and
bad side. Akeelah learns that she will need a coach for her to form a former spelling bee
competitor and UCLA English Department Chair Dr. Joshua Larabee, who will teaches
Akeelah not only to memorization of typical spelling bee words, Akeelah progresses
further in their spelling bee.

Conclusion:

Akeelah is eleven year old lives in a working neighborhood in South Los Angeles. Her life
is not like with others her father was died, her mother didn’t pay attention to her in
doing his job, she is smart girl that she spells while she’s playing. Akeelah did her best
to win the spelling bee contest and she is strong, and talented in spelling.
