Problems:

1. The number X, 2X + 7, 10X – 7 form a geometric progression. Find the value of

X.Ans: 7

Sol’n:
2𝑥 + 7 10𝑥 − 7
=
𝑥 2𝑥 + 7
(2𝑥 + 7)2 = 𝑥(10𝑥 − 7)
4𝑥 2 + 28𝑥 + 49 = 10𝑥 2 − 7𝑥
6𝑥 2 − 35𝑥 − 49 = 0
(6𝑥 + 7)(𝑥 − 7)

2. How much of a 75% solution of ethanol should a chemist add to 1500 mL of a

40% solution to obtain a 50% solution?Ans. 600 mL

Sol’n:

𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑥 = 𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛

0.5(𝑥 + 1500) = 0.75𝑥 + 0.4(1500)
0.5𝑥 + 750 = 0.75𝑥 + 600
0.25𝑥 = 150
𝒙 = 𝟔𝟎𝟎𝒎𝒍
3. A boy’s age is 5 years less than one- third of his father’s age. If the difference in
their age is 23, what is the age of the boy?Ans. 4

Sol’n:

𝑥 = 𝑓𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟
1
𝑥5 = 𝑠𝑜𝑛
3
1
𝑥 − ( 𝑥 − 5) = 23
3
1
𝑥 − 𝑥 + 5 = 23

2
𝑥 = 18

4. Emmanuel’s Corporation gross margin is 45% of sales. Operating expenses such

as sales and administration are 15% of sales. Emmanuel’s Corp is 40% tax
bracket. What percent of sales is their profit after taxes?Ans. 18%

Sol’n:

𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠 − 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑠 = 45% − 15% = 30%

𝑡𝑎𝑥 = 100% − 40% = 60%
𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑠 = 0.3(60%)
