Introduction

St. Luke, commonly known as Saint Luke the Evangelist, is a patron saint of artists and
physicians who traveled with Paul on various missions. St. Luke is regarded as the most literary
of the New Testament authors and the author of the Gospel According to Luke and the Acts of
the Apostles in the Christian tradition.

Luke is first identified in Paul's letters as his "coworker" and as the "beloved physician,"
the former of which is more significant as it designates him as one of a professional cadre of
itinerant Christian "workers," many of whom were instructors and preachers. Like Paul, he may
have made a living using his tent-making and medical abilities, but his primary vocation was the
expansion of the Christian mission.
