The Scorpion is equipped with a Breakout arm and a back-up arm. The Breakout: arm is connected to the unit (body) by the Breakout - Makeup cylinder. This arm is “Floated” and can move to any direction. The arm gives the unit the option to adjust itself to the backup arm position and the tool location. . The chain on each of the arms is tightened by the hydraulic cylinder (chain cylinder) in order to achieve the best grip. The cylinder will then need to be pulled in as much as possible where one quarter inch (%") to 2” of the cylinder tod will be exposed. If the cylinder rod is extended more than 2”, then an extra link (reference six) will need to be added to the chain (see chart describing number of links required per O.! The pressure of the chain cylinders can be adjusted to higher pressures than the Breakout cylinder. This will achieve a better grip on the tool and controlled pressure on the Breakout cylinder for controlled maximum torque. . The back up arm can slide sideways and adjusted for gripping to the needed location on the tool. . To achieve higher torque, it is recommended to keep the Breakout arm as close as possible to the Makeup arm. www.scorpion.ce Scorpion BREAK OuT — MAKE Up TonG INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATION 1. Determine the correct number of links per chain required to run O.D. range. See the chart provided. To properly maintain grip, and for best operational function and results, make absolutely certain that the correct number of links per chain corresponds to the per O.D. requirements according to the chart provided. Add to or remove, if necessary, when changing 0.D. sizes of too! to Breakout or Makeup. To adjust the height of the Scorpion, use the jack control valve (reference 100) to lift or lower the unit. CAUTION — this should only be done when the Backup arm chain is disconnected from the chain cylinder and the Breakout arm chain is disconnected from its cylinder and hooked up to the holder using the same pin tee (reference 10). Wrap the Backup arm's chain around the tool and tighten the chain cylinder. The cylinder rod will need to be pulled in as much as possible leaving not less than one-quarter inch (%4”) exposed. If at this time the rod is extended more than 2", an extra link will need to be added. Visually inspect the contact between the tool to the jaw tong dies (reference 23) and the link tong dies (reference 22). To hook up the Breakout arm, first wrap the Breakout arm chain around the tool and hook it up to the chain cylinder with the pin tee (reference 10). Adjust the arm to fit the tooi location by turning the turnbuckle. Slightly tighten the chain by the lever on the control valve (reference 50), and then check the tool position on the jaws again. Make sure It fits into the jaw’s tong dies. wwww.scorpion.cc Scorpion BREAK OuT — MAKE Up TONG INSTRUCTION FoR Op! SONTINUED 1. If the fit is correct, then disconnect the turnbuckle and tighten the chain by using the control valve (reference 50). 2. It is recommended to work the arms as close as possible to each other. Each of the arms carries a replacement jaw and the correct jaw O.D. size Is very important to insure proper use of the unit. Nore: See O.D. range table for jaw sizes. It is recommended to follow this chart precisely and change out jaws according to the chart 0.D. sizes for maximum results. www.scorpion.cc 1 N ~ Scorbiou BREAK Out -- MAKE Up TONG TO CHANGE Fi HORIZONTAL TO VERTICAL POSITION When unit is in horizontal position, jack up the Scorpion approximately halfway up to the middie position and secure the unit with the two (2) lock pins (reference 19) and secure with the hairpin (reference 34). . Insert the handle into the “Pivot Slot” position (adjacent to the pressure gauges) and pull the swivel lock pin (reference 19) halfway out. If the pin is too hard to pull, then try to lift the unit with the handle and pull the pin. . Slowly and carefully pull the handle down and the tong will turn to the side. Push the pin (reference 19) in to lock the unit in a vertical position. }. Push in the lock pin (reference 19) and secure it with the hairpin (reference 34). If the lock pin will not easily slide into position, lift the unit until the pin (reference 19) will go in smoothly. www.scorpion.cc = - 4 Scorpion BREAK OuT — MAKE Up TONG For BREAKOUT/ MAKEUP OPERATIONS . For Breakout or Makeup, operate the red lever on the contro! valve as marked. . The Breakout arm will rotate to the desired direction and will Breakout or Makeup the joint, as needed. . During the operation, maintain good contact between the jaw dies and the link dies and the tool at all times. If the tool moves away from the jaw, apply the pressure on the chain cylinder from the control valve and re-adjust the tool position toward the jaw, when and if needed. ‘The same procedure is required for the horizontal or vertical position. When using the Scorpion on tools smaller than the unit's capacity: a. Replace the chain links and the jaw sizes with the “Reducer Package”. b. The Reducer Package consists of a frame and a jaw set.
