DAY-1

Abc- mnemonics

1) Complement proteins- innate immunity/inflammation.

MAC(membrane attack complex)- defends against gram negative bacteria.
3 activation pathways:
classical -antibodies ( igG,igM- GM makes classic cars)
Alternate -opsonins (igG, c3b- binds lipopolysaccharides on bacteria- like flagging bacteria)
Lectin -mannose sugars ( binds to sugars on the microbe surface)
MAC complex (cytolysis) is important for neutralizing Neisseria species. Deficiency results in
recurrent infection. Get “Neis” (nice) Big MACs from 5-9 pm

Anaphylaxis (anaphylatoxins c3a,c4a,c5a) - makes immune system to release flood of

chemicals- may lead to shock.

2)

c5a also activates mast cells and results in neutrophil chemotaxis and also increases
concentrations of histamine, serotonin, leukotriene..
C3b - helps clear immune complexes.
** CD55/DAF( decay accelerating factor) and CI esterase inhibitor - prevents complement
activation on self cells.
3) Complement deficiencies:

4) SKIN LESIONS:
Actinic keratosis Premalignant lesions caused by sun exposure. Small, rough, erythematous or
brownish papules or plaques B C . Risk of squamous cell carcinoma is proportional to degree of
epithelial dysplasia
5) Myasthenia gravis:
