Miscellaneous New Features and Enhancements

Sends Default Level Preference

Pro Tools lets you enter a value from –144 –) to +12 dB for the initial fader level of newly-created sends with the Sends Default
to setting in the Mixing Preferences.

Sends Default to preference

The default setting is off (Sends Default to is not enabled) and the default value is -inf (– dB). Enabling Sends Default to sets
the default new send value to 0 dB. Enter any custom value between –144 and +12 dB.

If you upgraded from a previous version of Pro Tools, the Sends Default to setting might be visually different but the effect of the
setting will be unchanged.

Docked MIDI Editor Option

Pro Tools lets you open a MIDI clip in a docked MIDI editor by double-clicking the clip. This option is available in MIDI Prefer-
ences, as well as in the Right-click menu for MIDI and Instrument tracks, and MIDI clips.

To set Pro Tools to open any MIDI clip in a docked MIDI editor when double-clicking the clip:
1 Choose Setup > Preferences > MIDI.

Video Timecode Overlay

Timecode Overlay
(Pro Tools Studio and Ultimate Only)

Pro Tools lets you enable a real-time timecode overlay for both the Video window in Pro Tools as well as on any connected video
hardware display. The displayed timecode rate is based on the Timecode Rate setting in Session Setup (Setup > Session), which
must be equal to, 2x, or 1/2 the Frame Rate set for the video engine in the I/O section of the video track. If an incompatible rate is
chosen, N/A is displayed on the timecode overlay.

To enable and configure Timecode Overlay:

1 Choose Setup > Timecode Overlay Settings.

Timecode Overlay Settings window

2 In the resulting Timecode Overlay Settings window, enable the Timecode Overlay option.
3 Adjust the Size, Position, Color, and Opacity settings as desired.

Dolby Atmos Improvements

Link to ADM
Pro Tools lets you link to an ADM file when importing session data (Link to source media). This makes for much faster session
data import since Pro Tools does not need to convert the ADM into multi-mono files.

Linking to a WAV ADM BWF file is useful for quickly opening a file for inspection, or when basic edits need to be performed be-
fore re-exporting. This is quicker than creating new media upon import, and it does not take up additional disk space. However,
linked ADM files are more demanding on CPU and disk usage. It is recommended that you use a fast drive, such as an SSD to mit-
igate these demands. If you encounter any significant performance issues, use the Force to target session format option instead.

Performance decreases significantly if any clips linked to an ADM are shifted from their locations relative to one another. In other
words, you can move the entire ADM around on the timeline, but the system load will be much lighter if you leave the clips lined
up at the same start time.

Offline Bounce of Dolby Atmos Re-renders

Pro Tools lets you bounce re-renders of 7.1, 5.1, 2.0, and binaural Dolby Atmos mixes offline. The full mix can also be included,
or it can be filtered by Bed, Object, and/or Group. Configurations can be saved and recalled in the Bounce Mix window either man-
ually or with Presets. Multiple renders can be included along with the master ADM file in a single bounce.

To prepare a bounce of rendered mixes:

1 The session must contain Dolby Atmos elements. Any objects and beds that would otherwise appear in an ADM export may be
included in a re-render.
2 Choose File > Bounce Mix.
3 Select WAV (Dolby Atmos) as the File Type. The Create Master File (WAV ADM BWF) option is enabled by default.

4 Enable the Create Re-Renders (WAV) option.

5 Configure re-render settings. Once configured they will persist between sessions. You can also save re-render presets and recall
them at any time.

7 Select the desired File Format:

• (Multiple) Mono
• Interleaved
8 Select the desired source to Apply Program Level Metadata From:
• Factory Default
• Connected Renderer
• Previous ADM File
9 Click Bounce.

Re-Renders Bounce Options

File Format

Select either the Multiple Mono or Interleaved option.

Interleaved

Exported interleaved files are bounced directly to the selected folder. File names use the following convention:
Re-Render
• Definition
• <Bounce Name>_<Re-Render name>.wav
• Example
• MyProject_5.1 Full Mix.wav
ADM
• Definition
• <Bounce Name>.wav
• Example
• MyProject.wav

Multi-Mono

Exported re-renders are bounced to separate sub-folders for each re-render. Channel names are appended to the end of each file
name.

Dolby Atmos Improvements 11

Re-Render
• Definition
• Folder Name: <Bounce Name>_<Re-Render name>
• File Name: <Bounce Name>_<Re-Render name>.<channel abbreviation>.wav
• Example
• Folder Name: MyProject_5.1 Full Mix
• File Names: MyProject_5.1 Full Mix.L.wav, MyProject_5.1 Full Mix.R.wav, etc.

Program Level Metadata

Program Level Metadata applies to both the exported ADM file and any re-render files. This means Trim, Downmix, and Binaural
Render Mode (BRM) settings from the connected renderer or last-imported ADM may be passed through and applied to the re-ren-
ders, as well as being encoded as metadata in the ADM file.

Composite Beds

Pro Tools lets you assign individual Dolby Atmos groups to different beds that share the same output. This means you can maintain
a single bed in the renderer and also sub-divide the content by groups when creating re-renders. This is very helpful when working
with high channel counts (if channels are at a premium and need to be reserved for more objects). This lets you generate re-renders
for different groups with unique content in each of the beds, but without using extra channels for each bed.

Composite beds are only possible when managing groups with Pro Tools. They can only benefit the generation of re-renders from
the initial Pro Tools session. WAV ADM BWF files can only have a single group assigned to a bed for a given set of input IDs.
When Pro Tools generates an ADM file, and there are multiple groups assigned to beds that share the same bed output, the bed
will have no group assigned in the resulting ADM file.

Pro Tools | Sync X Improvements

Standalone Mode
Pro Tools | Sync X works in Standalone mode when Pro Tools is not running. In Standalone mode, the arrow buttons on the right
side of the front panel of Sync X navigate between individual menu items so you can use the device to generate or translate incom-
ing timecode and serve as a master clock for all connected devices. To select any item in the menu, press the Action button. Stand-
alone mode is operated entirely from the front panel of Sync X.

For detailed information on front panel operation, see the Pro Tools Sync X Guide.pdf.

Timecode Generation
To generate timecode in Standalone mode:
1 Navigate to Positional Reference.
2 Select Generate.

The left-hand display and buttons now offer options for starting and resetting timecode generation. The starting timecode position
can be defined on the following screen.

If timecode is being generated when Pro Tools attempts to claim Sync X, Pro Tools presents a warning dialog. You can cancel the
timecode generation and claim the Sync X or you can leave the timecode running (which leaves Sync X unclaimed by Pro Tools).

Clock Teardown and Persistence

Sync X settings remain unchanged when you quit Pro Tools. This means that the clock can continue uninterrupted in Standalone
mode. Then, if changes are made in Standalone mode, Pro Tools can acquire and change those settings when claiming Sync X from
Standalone mode. However, in doing so the previous Standalone settings are lost when next quitting Pro Tools.
Special Note for macOS On macOS, the sample rate may change when Pro Tools quits if Avid Audio Server is running. You can
set the desired sample rate in Audio MIDI Setup for the connected interface, and connected HD hardware will revert to this sample
rate whenever Pro Tools is not running. If you are not planning on using HD hardware as a Core Audio interface with other appli-
cations, you can rename or remove Avid Audio Server, then restart your computer. HD hardware and Sync X remain at the last used
sample rate after Pro Tools quits.

Sync X Firmware Update

A firmware update is required for Sync X to run in Standalone mode.

To update Sync X firmware:

 Load the .sy6 file with DigiTest from the Sync Firmware tab.

For detailed information on updating Sync X firmware, see the Pro Tools Sync X Guide.pdf.
