The Avid website (www.avid.com) is your best online source for information to help you get the most out of your Avid system.
The default setting is off (Sends Default to is not enabled) and the default value is -inf (– dB). Enabling Sends Default to sets
the default new send value to 0 dB. Enter any custom value between –144 and +12 dB.
If you upgraded from a previous version of Pro Tools, the Sends Default to setting might be visually different but the effect of the
setting will be unchanged.
To set Pro Tools to open any MIDI clip in a docked MIDI editor when double-clicking the clip:
1 Choose Setup > Preferences > MIDI.
2 Select Docked MIDI Editor from the Double-Clicking a MIDI Clip Opens selector.
Selecting the Double-clicking a MIDI Clip Opens Docked MIDI Editor option
3 Click OK.
Open in Docked MIDI Editor command: Right-click MIDI clip (left) or Right-click MIDI or Instrument track name (right)
Quantize Enhancements
When selected, the quantize grid menu follows the current grid value of the window/editor that is in focus.
The selected MIDI notes (and events) are quantized according to the current settings in the Quantize Event Operations window.
Exclusion Mode
The Filter buttons in Keyboard Shortcuts can now exclude specific criteria. This is very useful in narrowing down your search.
To exclude a criteria:
1 Choose Setup > Keyboard Shortcuts and then configure a search (or recall a Preset) that uses Filters.
2 Option-click (Mac) or Alt-click (Windows) on a Filter button to exclude that specific criteria. The button lights red.

3 Option/Alt-click again to toggle the inclusion or exclusion state of the Filter button.
4 To disable a filter, click its button.

The new Show US Key Caps option further improves Pro Tools custom keyboard shortcuts when using non-US English input
sources.
When Show US Key Caps is enabled in the Default Menu Shortcuts Assignments menu, default menu assignments will be the
same as when Lock to US Layout is enabled, but the key combinations will be displayed with US English keys.

Examples
Here is how Custom Keyboard Shortcuts displays menu assignments and key combinations when using an input source set to Ko-
rean while Lock to US Layout is enabled.

Timecode Overlay
(Pro Tools Studio and Ultimate Only)
Pro Tools lets you enable a real-time timecode overlay for both the Video window in Pro Tools as well as on any connected video
hardware display. The displayed timecode rate is based on the Timecode Rate setting in Session Setup (Setup > Session), which
must be equal to, 2x, or 1/2 the Frame Rate set for the video engine in the I/O section of the video track. If an incompatible rate is
chosen, N/A is displayed on the timecode overlay.
2 In the resulting Timecode Overlay Settings window, enable the Timecode Overlay option.
3 Adjust the Size, Position, Color, and Opacity settings as desired.
To revert to the default settings, click the Reset button in the Timcode Overlay Settings window.
Command-click (Mac) or Control-click (Windows) the Timecode Overlay button to open the Timecode Overlay Settings dialog.
Link to ADM
Pro Tools lets you link to an ADM file when importing session data (Link to source media). This makes for much faster session
data import since Pro Tools does not need to convert the ADM into multi-mono files.
Linking to a WAV ADM BWF file is useful for quickly opening a file for inspection, or when basic edits need to be performed be-
fore re-exporting. This is quicker than creating new media upon import, and it does not take up additional disk space. However,
linked ADM files are more demanding on CPU and disk usage. It is recommended that you use a fast drive, such as an SSD to mit-
igate these demands. If you encounter any significant performance issues, use the Force to target session format option instead.
Performance decreases significantly if any clips linked to an ADM are shifted from their locations relative to one another. In other
words, you can move the entire ADM around on the timeline, but the system load will be much lighter if you leave the clips lined
up at the same start time.
1 The session must contain Dolby Atmos elements. Any objects and beds that would otherwise appear in an ADM export may be
included in a re-render.
2 Choose File > Bounce Mix.
3 Select WAV (Dolby Atmos) as the File Type. The Create Master File (WAV ADM BWF) option is enabled by default.
5 Configure re-render settings. Once configured they will persist between sessions. You can also save re-render presets and recall
them at any time.
Re-Renders dialog
Interleaved
Exported interleaved files are bounced directly to the selected folder. File names use the following convention:
Re-Render
• Definition
• <Bounce Name>_<Re-Render name>.wav
• Example
• MyProject_5.1 Full Mix.wav
ADM
• Definition
• <Bounce Name>.wav
• Example
• MyProject.wav
Multi-Mono
Exported re-renders are bounced to separate sub-folders for each re-render. Channel names are appended to the end of each file
name.
Program Level Metadata applies to both the exported ADM file and any re-render files. This means Trim, Downmix, and Binaural
Render Mode (BRM) settings from the connected renderer or last-imported ADM may be passed through and applied to the re-ren-
ders, as well as being encoded as metadata in the ADM file.
Composite Beds
Pro Tools lets you assign individual Dolby Atmos groups to different beds that share the same output. This means you can maintain
a single bed in the renderer and also sub-divide the content by groups when creating re-renders. This is very helpful when working
with high channel counts (if channels are at a premium and need to be reserved for more objects). This lets you generate re-renders
for different groups with unique content in each of the beds, but without using extra channels for each bed.
Composite beds are only possible when managing groups with Pro Tools. They can only benefit the generation of re-renders from
the initial Pro Tools session. WAV ADM BWF files can only have a single group assigned to a bed for a given set of input IDs.
When Pro Tools generates an ADM file, and there are multiple groups assigned to beds that share the same bed output, the bed
will have no group assigned in the resulting ADM file.
Standalone Mode
Pro Tools | Sync X works in Standalone mode when Pro Tools is not running. In Standalone mode, the arrow buttons on the right
side of the front panel of Sync X navigate between individual menu items so you can use the device to generate or translate incom-
ing timecode and serve as a master clock for all connected devices. To select any item in the menu, press the Action button. Stand-
alone mode is operated entirely from the front panel of Sync X.
For detailed information on front panel operation, see the Pro Tools Sync X Guide.pdf.
Timecode Generation
To generate timecode in Standalone mode:
1 Navigate to Positional Reference.
2 Select Generate.
The left-hand display and buttons now offer options for starting and resetting timecode generation. The starting timecode position
can be defined on the following screen.
If timecode is being generated when Pro Tools attempts to claim Sync X, Pro Tools presents a warning dialog. You can cancel the
timecode generation and claim the Sync X or you can leave the timecode running (which leaves Sync X unclaimed by Pro Tools).
Load the .sy6 file with DigiTest from the Sync Firmware tab.
For detailed information on updating Sync X firmware, see the Pro Tools Sync X Guide.pdf.
