ENGLISH PLACEMENT TEST HANDBOOK

Welcome to the English Placement Test.


The purpose of the test is to place you in the right level.

Online (Pearson platform)


The online part is divided into three separate tests: The General Test that consists of 80
multiple-choice questions of mixed difficulty to be answered in 30 minutes. The Listening Test
that consists of three audio passages and 10 multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty to
be answered in 15 minutes. The Reading Test that consists of two reading passages with 10
multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty to be answered in 30 minutes.

Based on your scores in the three tests, you will be placed at the appropriate level.

Make sure you click the following link in the computer you will be using for the test (NO
OTHER DEVICES ALLOWED). It checks your browser and computer to make sure that it
can be used to take the test:

This is how it should look. If any checkmark (✓) is missing, fix it before the day of the Test. Also check
Voice Recording.

When you receive your Username and Password, you will also be given a link to the site where
you will take the test.
Try to login immediately to make sure your account is working.

Make sure you login at 7:45 am. The online tests will begin at 8 am sharp.

Here you will see the start and due date and time for each of the three tests:

They will normally show up on the day of the exam!!!

At the appropriate time the first test should have an Open sign on the right. If you don’t see it,
keep reloading the page until you see it.

BE MINDFUL OF THE TIME ALLOTTED TO EACH TEST!!!

Please be sure:
• To have your earphones/headphones.
• To have two picture IDs (e.g., your University Identification card) at hand. You must look
like the photo (at least in one of them).
• That there is NO announcement that the electricity will be off.
• That your Internet provider will not suspend the service. The test cannot be restarted once
you have begun.
• That your Internet bandwidth is enough to take the test.
• That you have told everyone in your house that you will be taking an exam.

Placement Test Tips for Students

1. You must have a computer with a working camera and a microphone. NO OTHER
DEVICES WILL BE ALLOWED. Make sure you have one available. The camara must be
clear (so it’s easy to see your face).
2. Once you begin your test, you cannot reset the clock. If the electricity or the Internet fails,
you will most likely lose those points.
3. Your test will begin on Saturday at 8 am (online: General, Listening, Reading).
4. No caps/masks/hats allowed.
5. If you do not have a green screen, do not use a virtual background.
6. NOBODY can help you answer the questions!
7. If you still don’t have your Username and Password, check whether it’s in Spam.
8. If you have any questions (before the day and time of the exam), please write me at
generalesscj@unicah.edu and be sure to include:
• Your full name
• Your account number
• An email address that you regularly check.

9. Once you begin the test you cannot stop the timer, you will be graded based on your
answers. Remember to press SUBMIT before moving onto the next test.
