News Item Text


A news item is a text that informs readers about current events. The events are noteworthy or
significant. It means that if there is an important event that should be known by a large number
of people, it deserves to be covered in the news. There are three important things in news item
text, which is:
 Main Events / Newsworthy Event(s): it summarizes the event
 Elaboration / Background event(s): it provides further details about what happened, to
whom, and under what conditions
 Information Resource (Source): it contains remarks from participants, observers, and
authorities who are knowledgeable on the event.

News Item Text is used to inform readers about current events that are considered newsworthy or
significant. Given the significance of news item wording, it must adhere to certain requirements,
which is::
 Pay attention to facts (write the text in simple language)
 Uses saying verb: "...." He said, reported, said, reported.
 Sometimes the scene is mentioned at the beginning of the news: Jakarta - ... .. / Kuala
Lumpur – …
 Uses the past tense to explain news events. But if the fact that has not yet happened or is
in the form of facts, then the simple present tense can be used
 Brief telegraphic information about the event recorded in the heading
 Uses of adverbs: time, place and manner
 Uses of material processes to retell the event
Two state-owned lenders — Bank Mandiri and Bank BNI — will build temporary houses for
400 families displaced by the recent strong earthquake that hit Sigi District, Central Sulawesi
Province.
Second Assistant Secretary of Sigi District Government Iskandar Nontji informed that the
temporary houses for 100 families will be constructed by Bank Mandiri in the South Sibayala
area of Dolo Sub-district. Meanwhile, Bank BNI will erect the temporary shelters for 300
families in Jonoge Village of Sigi Biromaru Sub-district that severely suffered from soil
liquefaction during the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that rocked the area on Sept 28, he noted.
The temporary houses will be constructed on pieces of land, owned by the sub-district
government, village, and community members, he stated, adding that the Sigi district
government will facilitate all related parties to sign a letter of agreement.
“We are going to provide a letter of agreement that will be signed by all related parties to avoid
any unexpected eventuality in the future,” he explained. (Antara, 17th October, 2018)
