THE NATIONAL
ARTIST IN THE
PHILIPPINES
The order of national artist is the highest national
honor and recognition conferred to a selected
artist who has contributed much to the
development and promotion of Philippine Arts
whether in the field of Music, Dance, Theater,
Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts,
and Architecture or Allied Arts.
The National Artist aims to recognized the
following;
1. The national artist is distinguished Filipino artist who made
significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the country
2. Filipino artistic accomplishments is at the highest level
promoting creative expressions and national cultural identity.
3. Filipino artist who has dedicated his life and works to forgive
new paths and directions for future generations of the Filipino
artists.
On Becoming a National Artist

The order of National Artist also known as


Orden ng mga pambansang Alagad ng
Sining was created by virtue of a President
Proclamation No. 1001 dated April 27,1972
Which created the Award and Decoration of
National Artist, “to give appropriate
recognition and prestige to Filipinos who
have distinguished themselves and made
outstanding contributions to Philippine arts
and letters,”
• The deserving individual should recommended by the
Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) as well as by the
National Center for Culture and Arts (NCCA)
• Acting as the order of the National Artist Award
Secretariat ( ONAA) shall plan, organize and implement
the order of National Artists Award.
• The rules of the National Commission on Culture and the
Arts, the Order of National Artists should be conferred
every three years.
THE SYMBOL OF BEING NATIONAL
ARTIST
National Artists are given a Grand Collar symbolizing their
status.
The award is given during a ceremony at the Malacanang
Palace and awarded by the Philippine President who
provides the insignia
( badge of authority) of the order as this recognition is based
on the creativity, imagination, technical proficiency with the
highest degree uniquely expressing Filipino culture,
traditions as well as their aspirations
The Grand Collar featuring circular links portraying the
arts, and an eight-pointed conventionalized sunburst
suspended from a sampaguita wreath in green and white
enamel. The central badge is a medallion divided into
three equal portions, red, white, and blue, recalling the
Philippine flag, with three stylized letter Ks—the “KKK”
stands for the CCP’s motto: “katotohanan, kabutihan, at
kagandahan” (“the true, the good, and the beautiful”),

The rewards of being conferred as a National
Artist
1.The rank and title of the National Artist, as
proclaimed by the President of the Philippines;
2.The National Artist gold-plated medallion minted
by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and
citation;
3. Lifetime emolument, material and physical benefits such as a
minimum cash award of Two Hundred Thousand Pesos
(P200,000.00) for living awardees; minimum cash award of One
Hundred Fifty Thousand Pesos (150,000.00), for posthumous
awardees; Life insurance coverage for Awardees who are still
insurable; a state of Funeral benefit not exceeding P500,000.00.

ceremonies and all other cultural presentations.
The Criteria for the selection of a National
Artist
The Order of National Artist shall be given to artists who have met the
following criteria:
1. Living artists who are Filipino citizens at the time of
nomination, as well as those who died after the establishment of
the award in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at the time of their
death;
2. Artists who, through the content and form of their works, have
contributed in building a Filipino sense of nationhood;
The Order of National Artist shall be given to artists who have met the
following criteria:

3. Artists who have pioneered in a mode of creative


expression or style, thus earning distinction and making an
impact on succeeding generations of artists;
4. Artists who have created a substantial and significant body
of work and/or consistently displayed excellence in the
practice of their art form thus enriching artistic expression or
style; and
The Order of National Artist shall be given to artists who have met the following
criteria:

5. Artists who enjoy broad acceptance through:


• prestigious national and/or international recognition,
such as the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining, CCP Thirteen
Artists Award and NCCA Alab ng Haraya;
• critical acclaim and/or reviews of their works;
• respect and esteem from peers.
The procedure in being nominated as a Candidate for
National Artist
1. Candidates may be nominated under one or more of the following
categories:
a) Dance- choreography,direction and/or performance.
b) Music-composition,direction, and or performance.
c) Theater-direction, performance and/or production design.
d) Visual Arts, painting, sculpture, print making, photography,
installation art, mixed media works, illustration, graphic arts,
performance art and/or imaging.
e. Literature-poetry, fiction, essay, playwriting, journalism
and/or literary criticism.
f. Film and Broadcast Arts-direction, writing, production
design, cinematography, editing, camera work, and/or
performance.
g. Architecture, Design and Allied Arts- architecture
design, interior design, industrial art design, landscape
architecture and fashion design.
2. A cover letter from the nominating organization. The
cover letter shall be accompanied by a Board Resolution
approving the nomination concerned with the said
resolution signed by the organization President and duly
certified by the Board Secretary.
3. A duly accomplished nomination form;
4. A detailed curriculum vitae of the nominee;
5. A list of the nominee’s significant works
categorized according to the criteria;
6. The latest photograph (color or black and white)
of the nominee, either 5″ x 7″ or 8″ x 11″;
7. Pertinent information materials on the nominee’s
significant works (on CDs, VCDs and DVDs);
8. Copies of published reviews; and
9. Any other document that may be required.

NATIONAL ARTIST AND

Fernando Amorsolo
Was born on May 30. 1892 in Paco,
Manila.
Labelled the country’s first National
Artist in 1972 by then President
Marcos, Fernando Amorsolo is often
known as the ‘Grand Old Man of
Philippine Art’. The Spanish-trained
realist developed a backlighting
technique, where his colorful
depictions of local people reflect the radiance of the
Philippine sun. The figures and illuminated
landscapes magically glow on the canvas. Despite
his deteriorating health and failing eyesight, he
remained prolific until the end, producing up to 10
paintings a month until his death at the age of 80.
Amorsolo’s creativity defines the nation’s culture
and heritage to this day.
Levi Celerio was born on April 30,
1910 in Tondo Manila.
Composer and lyricist who received
his scholarship ( Academy of Music
in Manila and join the Manila
Symphony Orchestra as the youngest
member.
He was also included in the
Guinness Book of World Records as
the only person
who made music through a leaf.
He was able to composed over 4,000 songs.
His songs were made for Local movies while some
become popular love songs.

 Alice Reyes was born on October 14, 1942 in
Manila.
 Great contributor in the promotion and
development of contemporary dance in the
Philippines as a teacher, director, dancer and
choreographer.
 Filipino modern dance using Filipino materials
was the greatest contribution to the development
of Philippine arts.
 Alice began at very early age with classical
ballet and later trained in folk dance ( Bayanihan
Philippine National Dance company.
 She pursued modern dance and jazz education in
United States

Nestor Visente Madali Gonzales
also known as N.V.M was born on
September 8, 1915 in Romblon.
He was a fictionist, essayist, poet,
and a teacher.
Gonzales asserted that the English
language can be used to express
and shape Filipino culture.

 Juan Felipe De Jesus Nakpil also known
for Juan Nakpil was born May 26, 1899 in
Quiapo Manila.
 Nakpil was a Filipino architect, teacher and
a community leader. In 1973, he was
named one of the National Artists for
architecture regarded as the Dean of
Filipino Architects.
 He was the Product of the University of the
Philippines where he studied Engineering
at the University of Kansas, USA where he
earned his degree in Civil Engineering.
He pursued Architecture in France at the Fontainebleau
School of Fine Arts
He believed that there is a Philippine Architecture that
reflects Filipino culture.

was born on January 26, 1930.
He was the youngest national artist
at age 46.
He helped shape local sculpture in
the contemporary form as his
expertise is academic

 Was born on January 22, 1911 in Ermita ,
Manila.
 Guerrero was playwright writer, a director,
teacher and artist.
 He wrote more than 100 plays with almost
half published.
 13 plays (first published in 1947), 8 Other
plays (1952), 7 more plays (1962), 12 New
plays (1975), My Favorite 11 plays (1976), 4
latest plays (1980)
 Guerrero was the Director of the Dramatic
Club at the University of the Philippines for
16 years.
Works of Guerrero are; The Forsaken
house, Our strange Ways, In Unity, Deep
in my Heart and Three rats
 Catalino “Lino” Ortiz Brocka was
born on April 3, 1939 at Pilar, Sorsogon.
 He fought for “ freedom of expression”
in the Philippine Constitution.
 He was able to create 66 films before his
death.
 He directed not only commercial films
but theater plays through the Philippine
Educational Theater Association (PETA)
and the Concerned Artist of the
Philippines (CAP).
His award winning pieces were
all recognized by the FAMAS,
TOYM, CCP and Cannes Film
Festival.

 Ishmael Bernal was born on
September 30, 1938 in Manila.
 ‘ The Genius of Philippine Cinema’
 He earned his English degree from
the University of the Philippines and
earned also his Licentiate in French
Literature.
 Bernal is a director, actor, and
screenwriter (1996)
 His masterpiece includes Nunal sa
Tubig (1975), City After dark (1980),
Relasyon (1982)
 Fransisco Coching was born on January 29,
1919 in Buting, Pasig was an illustrator who
worked for the Liwayway magazine.
 Known as “ King of Komiks” and “ Dean of
Filipino Illustrators”
 Hes works were products of his fertile
imagination, passion for storytelling, and
excellent draftsmanship.
 His masterpiece includes Marabini
( Marahas na Binibini) or strong seductive,
modern women of his comics. Later
characters are Pusakal, Talipandas and
heroes Dimasalang.
 At the age of 54, Coching retired after producing 53 komik novels
and died on September 1, 1998 at the age of 79.
 Valera was born on August 31, 1912 in Abra.
He is said to be the first ‘National Artist for
Fashion Design.’
 A product of De La Salle from his Elementary
and High School Edication.
 He created ‘Terno’ by combining in a one-
piece set the four-piece ensemble with a
blouse, skirt, overskirt and scarf. The four-
piece combined with zipper a t the back and
oversized bell sleeves or ‘Butterfly sleeves.’
 Valera was Filipino designer considered as
‘High Priest of local fashion’
