The State.

State is defined as a political division of a federation maintaining a notable degree of authority.

State may be described as an organisation of group of people living in a definite geographical area with a
sovereign government.

Meaning of a Nation.

A nation is defined as an organised political community United by common history, culture or language.

Nation may also be defined as a homogeneous group of people with the same ancestral origin.

Differences between a nation and a state

1. It is not compulsory that a nation must be under a unique sovereign government but a state enjoys
sovereignty.

2. A nation is always homogeneous while a state must possess a definite territory.

Meaning of Society.

Society is referred to as the aggregate of people living together in a well organised community.

Differences between the state and society.

1. Society is wider in scope than state.

2. Society is a natural unity of people bound together in social relationship while state is a political
organised unity of people.

3. Society has no formal organised government but state has formal organised government.

4. Sovereignty belongs to a state but does not belong to society.
