INT. RESTAURANT. EVENING.

ROBERT, a man in his 50s with kind looking eyes and short grey hair, is sitting alone at a
table, looking at his phone with his eyes squinted as he types awkwardly. The restaurant is
fairly quiet, with a gentle hum of chatter echoing through the room as a man approaches the
table. The man, CARL, clears his throat and the camera pans up from Robert’s perspective to
see Carl standing anxiously by the table.

CARL
You must be Robert.

ROBERT
(Nodding)
That’s me. Carl?

Carl nods and pulls the chair out to sit down opposite Robert. Upbeat heartfelt music begins
to play as the scene cuts between dialogue to introduce what the characters are about.

ROBERT
I always thought there was a piece missing, I just hope one day I’ll be able to find it.

CARL
Ever since David passed, part of me has always felt like dating someone else would
be betraying him but I’m getting older and I think it’s time I move on.

INT. ROBERT’S LIVING ROOM. DAY.

Carl and Robert are sat on the sofa holding hands.

CARL
I think it’s time we made it official.

ROBERT
(Laughing)
Oh I feel like a teenager again.

INT. ROBERT’S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT

ROBERT
This is June and Sally, my daughters.

CARL
Nice to meet you.

There is a beat and the two teens just stare at Carl.

The scene cuts to the same place in the living room except it’s just Robert and Carl now.
CARL
I don’t think they like me.

ROBERT
They do, they’re just like that sometimes.

CARL
I really want them to like me.

ROBERT
It’s ok, they just need time to adjust and warm up to you. Once they get to know you
they’ll love you just as much as I do.

CARL
You love me?

It cuts to Robert looking stunned before the screen goes black.

INT. ROBERT’S LIVING ROOM. DAY.

Robert and Margaret are sat on the couch.

ROBERT
I just care about him so much, I don’t want to lose him.

EXT. PARK. DAY.

A family picnic with Robert, Carl, June and Sally. Carl is visibly trying to engage the two
girls into a conversation or a game but they’re both ignoring him.

CARL (V.O)
I need them to like me, for Robert’s sake. I know he pretends it doesn’t bother him, but I
know it does.
