MIDTERM ACTIVITY:

General Instructions: Answer each of the following items correctly. Use other sheet of bond
paper to
show your solutions if possible. (Upload your answer in the VC section in LMS)

A. State whether the following are examples of vector or scalar quantities:

1.1 A distance of 2 m = Scalar
1.2 A force of 35 N acting 30o W of N = Vector
1.3 A velocity of 3 m·s-1 on a bearing of 115o = Vector
1.455 s = Scalar
1.5 m·s1 = Vector
1.6165 m North = Vector

B. How long should a line be to represent 19 N if you use a scale of:

2.1 1 cm: 2 N? = 9.5cm
2.2 1 cm: 3 N? = 6.33cm
2.3 1 cm: 5 N? = 3.8cm

C. Find the total distance traveled from A to B to C to D to E in this journey

Answer = 13km
D. What is the displacement in the journey given in 3.1, if the start of the journey was going
East?

Answer = 1.5km

E. Take right as the positive direction.

Find the resultant of the following forces:

5.1 2 N right; 7 N right = 9 N

5.2 4 N right; 12 N left = -8 N
5.3 12 N left; 16 N left = -28 N
5.4 3 N right; 6 N left; 15 N right; 8 N left = 4 N
5.5 16 N left; 24 N right; 13 N left = -5 N
F. Determine the resultant of the following vectors, using a scale
diagram.
a.

Using the scale 1cm = 5N

45N = 9cm

15N = 3cm

50N = 10cm

Resultant ( R )

R = A+B+C

R = -9+3+10 = 4

R = 4cm / 20 N (to right =======>)

b.

Using the scale 1cm = 5N

30N = 6cm

35N = 7cm

20N = 4cm

25N = 5cm

Resultant ( R )

R = A+B+C+D

R = -6+(-7)+4+5 = -4

R = 4cm / 20 N (to left <=======)
