Introducing Someone

1.Target Language
Commonly used phrases in introducing strangers

✓ Formally:

- (Name). I do not think you have met (name).

- I do not think you know (name).

- May I introduce you to (name).

✓ Informally:

- This is (name).

- He/ She is (name).

Note

It is also common to just say “Hi/ Hello” as a response in this informal introduction.

Mr. Thompson and Mr. Williams attended their company party. They mingled with
guests including visitors from other companies. Mr. Thompson saw his childhood
friend in the said party.

Mr. Thompson: Jake! Is that you?

Jake: Wow! Johnny you’re here! It’s been ages since the last time I saw
you! How are you?

Mr. Thompson: I’m pretty good. Oh, by the way, I would like to introduce to you my
neighbor and officemate, Mr. Henry Williams. Mr. Williams, I do not
think you have met, Jake Scott, my long lost friend.

Jake: It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Williams.

Mr. Williams Nice to meet you, Mr. Scott.

Mr. Thompson: Would you mind to join us at our table, Jake?

Jake: I would love to, but I can’t. I need to accompany my boss who’s
right there. I will just visit you one of these days.

Mr. Thompson: I understand. Okay, my family will wait for you.

Jake: Sure. Anyway, it’s nice meeting you Mr. Williams.

Robert is already playing basketball in the park when Danny called him.

Danny: Robert, these are my new classmates, Janice and Joseph. They want to
hang out with us, too.

Janice: Hi, Robert. Is it okay if we join you?

Robert: Sure. No problem. Welcome to the club Janice and Joseph.

Janice: Thanks.

Danny: It’s getting hot here. Let’s find an ice cream shop.

Janice: Nice idea. I know the best ice cream shop in town.

Robert: Sounds good. Let’s go.

Note

“Nice to meet you”- when a person just introduced someone to you for the first time
( it’s as good as saying “hello”)

“Nice meeting you”- when you are already preparing to leave ( it’s as good as saying
“goodbye”)

When (verb + ing) form is used as a noun, it is gerund.

* used as a subject

Example: Learning English is as easy as ABC.

* object of a verb

Example: I like learning English.

* object of preposition

Example: We are talking about learning English.
