UNLV/Department of Teaching & Learning Secondary Lesson Plan 1 State Standards): RL 11-121: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain, RL.I1-12.2: Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text. 2.Teaching Mode(s): direct instruction 3.Objective(s):By the end of the lesson, SWBAT understand the importance of citation of strong evidence from sources other than Logos based sources as well as they will be able to determine the central idea of a text and know how to use that information to further an argument, Students will need, Pen/Peneil, Highlighter, Computer/Chromebook (provided by the school at the beginning of the year to all high school students), worksheet and transcript provided on canvas to students, ability to access canvas course and google drive, an open mind and their listening ears 5 Instructional Procedures: students will use the poem “Touchscreen” by Marshall “Soulful” Jones to make a one paragraph argument about the importance of disconnecting from technology in our society. They will answer the question “is technology harmful to our socialization in society?” B. Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences: 00:00-00:010 Bell Ringer: Students will write, in a provided google doc, if they believe technology harms student's social life or is more beneficial than harmful (00:10-00:25 students and I will view the video on the board once and then again with the transcript in front of them to help them see the point being made. Students, at this time, will fill out the “during” section of the notes to help them with their analysis of body language and language being used. (00:25-00:55 Students will have a light discussion about technology and the harms/benefits of it in our everyday lives as well as some of the specific points made by Mr. Jones during his poem. These points include, but are not limited to: ‘© The points he makes about the garden of eden ‘© The points he makes about the “apple picking” ‘© The double meaning he has for everything he says like the “slipped Dise’ Extension: If more time is needed for understanding I will answer questions the next day. If students finish early they are to do any missing work that they might have. If they need more time individually 1 will be available on zoom call from 5 PM to 7 PM that night to further assist and I will go over it the next day with individual questions, Lemov Technique: For this lesson I will actively attempt to use the Lemov Technique of “no opt out” since there are no wrong answers here, my class will have no excuse to opt out. 6.Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners: 1 will follow all EP and code 504 modifications needed tothe lesson, Materials: Same as above; accommodations provided pursuant to individual LE.P.s may include use of keyboard, computer and/or spell check device.
