I hope these designs spark your imagination and artistic spirit, Some of these projects may be a bit challenging, but witha little patience and practice, you will be able to create spectacular showpieces to treasure for along time, | would encourage you to try each model atleast once ‘with a normal sheet of paper before taking the time to paint and fold your project paper. I like to practice anew moilel a least twice before [try wetlolding it —Paul Frasco Werfolding Wetfolding is a technique where a small amount of water is applied to the paper while the model is being folded. “This affects the fibers ofthe paper, allowing itto bend and stretch without tearing, As the paper dries it “remember” its final shape, resulting in more organic and lifelike models that will hold their final shape without the need of wire or glue. Many types of paper can be used for wetfolding as long as they have one key ingredient—sizing. Sizing is like glue that holds the paper fibers together and most “fine art” or “watercolor papers” found in craft stores are made with it. Begin each project by painting the papers according to the supplied instructions. ‘Afier painting, and after allowing enough time for the paper to fully dry or “cure” itis time to start folding. Begin by applying a small amount of water to the paper using a damp paper towel or spray bottle. Once the paper absorbs the water, follow the folding instructions. As the folding progresses, wrap or camp key pieces ofthe sculpture to hold them in place while the paper dries, Once dry, the model will hold its shape for years to come. For best results follow the tips on the Following page. 4 Fantascical Creatures 1. Mixing a few dollops of paint with a few drops of water will allow the paint to flow more easily. The paint can be applied to larger areas using a paper towel 2, Do not worry about applying the paint evenly across the whole paper Some inconsistency will give the finished model a natural look and areas can be touched up with paint after folding. 3, Give the paper enough time to cure after each coat of paint. Itwill be «dry when itis no longer sticky to the touch, Speed up the drying process by using a hair dryer. 4. A moist paper towel is recommended when applying water to the paper. Paper towels give the best control over how much water is being applied, but a spray bottle may also be used. 5. Be careful not to apply too much water to the paper. Ifit is too wet, it will fray and come apart. It should be just wet enough to be pliable, If too much water is applied, leave it out to dry for several minutes before continuing. 6."The paper may warp or curl slightly when wet. This perfectly lity knife natural and occursas the paper fibers expand. Use a sharp and ruler to cut the paper square. 7. For final shaping, use strips of paper towels to wrap the key parts of the project together as it cries. Binder clips, clothespins, or paper clips can also be used to clamp the model together. Once dry, the model will hold its shape. ats have long been the subject of mystery and terror. He was heavily influenced by the modern design techniques of Robert Lang and the sculptural techniques of Eric Joisel. His origami work has been featured in public spaces, museums, and galleries throughout the New York area. In 2012, using a single sheet of 18" x 18” paper, he folded a Dragon Whelp for installation at Stony Brook University. The final model stood an impressive five feet tall. His designs are known for melding mixed media and art techniques to the preparation of the paper used for folding. This has yielded a signature style that is often mistaken for sculpture or papier miché. Acknowledgments Towea great deal to a great many people who have supported me in this publishing adventure. Many in the origami and art community have contributed to the origami designs, the diagrams, the photography, and have mentored meas I have grown as.an artist. Thank you to my family and friends for the support during the long nights and weekends, jill Wendortf for outdoor model photography, Ryan Dong for picking up the diagramming slack when I fell behind, Talo Kawasaki for putting me on the right track with the woodland fairy, Sok Song for giving me my start in diagramming, Sam Ita for untold Illustrator technical assists, and Max Steiner for the lasercut acrylic that can make anything look good. Additional thanks to the other artists Thave long admired and who have always been supportive—Peter, Michael, Robert, Gay, John, Tom, and more than I could ever name—and to the whole crew of test folders who helped me bring complex and artful origami to you in a kit that we hope will be both challenging and rewarding. 64 Fantastical Creatures
