‘Special Supplement to the January 2000 [TG Journal Dissent | Erie Ewazen Prelude and Fugue for Trumpet Choir for Six B-flat Trumpets A @y Agito YAivs Baezosa Cugitiaa, 08.04. OL International Trumpet Guild. ‘To the Members of ITG: Thave enjoyed a wonderful association with ITG dating back to1993 when I received a commission to write my Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. I was delighted and honored when ITG President James Oleott asked me if would compose a fanfare in honor of the ITG's 25th anniversary. I have written a great deal of music for trumpet, and I wanted to write a work that expressed my enthusiasm for the striking, colorful sound of the trumpet ensemble — a work that was joyful and fun and also captured the historie roots of brass ensemble writing, Of course, I immediately thought of the great contrapuntal music of the Renaissance and Baroque — hence my Prelude and Fugue for Trumpet Choir in honor of ITG. It uses some of my. favorite 20th century modal harmonies in a fugal setting. All the voices enjoy equal partici- pation in a celebration of the resonance that only a trumpet choir can produce with such brilliance! Thank you, ITG, for continuing your great historical and musical traditions into the next millennium while broadening your musical landscape through a dedication to the creation and performance of new music. With best wishes, Eric Ewazen Eric Ewazen was born in 1954 in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a BM. at the Eastman School of Music, and M.M. and D.M.A. degrees from the Juilliard School. He is a recipient of numerous composition awards and prizes. Ewazen’s works have been commissioned and performed by many soloists, chamber ensembles, and orchestras worldwide. His brass music includes three commissions by the Ameri- can Brass Quintet and Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, commissioned by ITG. His works are recorded on EMI Classics, Summit Records, d’Note Records, CRS Records, New World, Clique Track, Helicon, Hyperion, Cala, and Albany. THE LAST SPRING Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907) Arranged by Dennis L. Horton a Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen, Norway in 1843 and is recognized as that country's most important composer. Trained in Leipzig, Germany, he became very familiar with the European romantic tradition and his early works show that influence. By 1865, he had made significant strides in developing his own stylistic traits which have influenced numerous other Norwegian composers. His most famous works are Peer Gynt Suite, String Quartet in G Minor, Piano Concerio in A Minor, and the Holberg Suite. Essentially a lyric composer, Grieg wrote many songs and lyric pieces such as The Last Spring. Originally a voice and piano work, it was also scored for string orchestra. The arrangement of The Last Spring, op. 34 (1880) for eight trumpets (opt. pic, six Bb, and flugelhomn) by Dennis L. Horton focuses on the possible colors available in the trumpet ensemble. ‘The use of piccolo trumpet as an octave coloration, the use of mutes, playing into the stand, and the haunting tonal quality of the flugelhom, all combine to present an effective rendition of this elegiac melody. ‘As mentioned above, the piccolo trumpet is optional but certainly adds to the "color palette" of the ensemble. In every instance where there is a solo line (m. 3, letter B, letter D, m. 35), the other players should be instructed to play into the stand so as to allow the solo instrument to project Without having to force the sound. Care should be taken not to hurry the phrase endings - a beat of rest in certain places will enhance the inherent vocal quality of this beautiful work. The "Fp" marking should not be a sudden drop in dynamic but, rather, about one beat of "F* followed by rs Placement for the players works best in a semi-circle: from the left - Tpl, Picc tp, Tpll, Tp lll, Tp1V, FlHn, Tp Vi, Tp V. Horton Beir Yo neosa ‘ Coeirian, 0%. 04. OL ELAN BRASS j IMPRESSIONS { CONGRATULAMINI MIHI Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c, 1525-1594) Arranged and edited by Dennis L. Horton Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was born c. 1525, probably in Palestrina, Italy. His earliest training was as a choirboy and his first important musical positions in the church were as organist and maestre di capella in the vicinity of Rome. In the 1560s and 1570s his reputation as an outstanding composer were established and in 1577 he was asked to rewrite the plainchant books, following the guidelines of the Council of Trent. A prolific composer of masses, motets, and other sacred works, his style is characterized by a rather seamless polyphonic texture where all voices share equal prominence. Congratulamini Mihi is a four voice motet dating from 1563 and is an excellent example of Palestrina's compositional style. In this arrangement for eight trumpets (which, if possible, should be antiphonal: I - IV on one side and V - VII on the other), the four parts have been expanded into eight parts so as not to burden any player with continuous playing. Each of the respective parts (I and V, {Land VI, If and VII, and IV and VIII) have the other part as cues when not playing. Nearing the end, at measure 61,the voices begin to enter together, creating a great crescendo of sound both dynamically and spatially The editor's marks (slurs and crescendo/decrescendo) are guidelines which may be altered depending on the performance situation. The slurs are generally to be understood as phrase marks, allowing the player to articulate as needed (albeit legato). The crescendo/decrescendo marks should be gentle and follow the shape of the line. The ideal performance would be one in which the trumpet ensembie emulates a choir - perfect ease in tonal delivery, accurate intonation, and musical sensitivity. Note: There are two copies of the score in this edition. The first is without the cues that are notated in each part and the second shows all of the cues.
