PART 1. Answer the following questions comprehensively.

1. What is Physics? Elaborate your answer.

Physics is the study of matter and energy and how they affect each other,
another
definition of physics is the branch of science that deals with the structure of
matter
and how the fundamental constituents of the universe interact.

2. What are the different branches of Physics? Give at least 10 and define each.

Branches of Physics Definition

Classical physics mainly deals with various laws of motion and
[1] Classical Physics gravitation.Newtonian mechanics, thermodynamics, and Maxwell's theory of
electromagnetism are all examples of classical physics.
[2] Modern Physics Modern Physics is primarily centred around the two theories of relativity and quantum mechanics.
Atomic Physics, Nuclear Physics, Relativistic Physics, and Quantum Physics are examples of modern
[3] Nuclear PhysicsPhysics. Nuclear physics is concerned with the constituents, structure, behaviour and interactions
of atomic nuclei. Example nuclear reactions include radioactive decay, fission, the
[4] Atomic Physics break-up of a nucleus, and fusion, the merging of nuclei.
[5] Mechanical Physics Atomic physics is involved with the composition of the atom apart from the nucleus. It is
mainly concerned with studying and understanding the behaviour of electrons in the shells
around the nucleus. This branch of physics deals with electrons, ions, and neutral atoms.
[6] Mechanics Examples of Atomic physics is the scientific study of the structure of the atom, its energy
[7] AcousticsMechanical physicsstates, and its interactions with other particles and with electric and magnetic fields.
is involved with understanding the motion of material objects and how they are influenced by
forces. Examples of mechanical physics are Pushing a car that has run out of gas and Pulling or pushing a door
[8] Optics to enter a room. Mechanics focuses on the movement and motion of physical objects under a force and
when at rest. An example of mechanics is the distance it takes for a car going 30mph to
[9] Thermodynamics stop.
Acoustics studies vibrations and focuses on the production, control, transmission, reception, and effects of
[10] Astrophysics sound. An example of Acoustics is a home theatre designed with optimal furniture design and room design
where sound travels clearly.
Optics focuses on light and its properties. An example of Optics is a digital camera and wireless
mouse.
Astrophysics is an important branch of physics. Space science is a subset of astronomy that mainly studies celestial objects and their
composition by using the laws and principles of physics to describe the phenomenon.
Week 1 – IL Session 1 prepared by: Robert Morante
Thermodynamics is involved with heat and other forms of energy and it focuses on the transfer of energy from one form to another. An
example of Thermodynamics is, if we are studying a car engine, the burning gasoline inside the cylinder of the engine is the
thermodynamic system; the piston, exhaust system, radiator, and air outside form the surroundings of the system.
PART II. Fill out the table below to show the interrelationship between Physics,
Technology, and Society.

Physics Technology Society

appliances, farm increase crop yield, and
machinery and gadgets global communications

PART III. Reflect on the following questions.

1. From the different branches of Physics, which interests you the most?
Explain why; you can provide relevant situations and advancement in Physics
to substantiate your answer.

From the different branches of physics, the most interesting for me is Optics because I didn't know
that my smartphone is used in optics.

2. How can the knowledge of Physics be applied in your daily life? You can cite
situations in which Physics can be observed.

Physics can be observed when you use your phone because it allows you to see the display
and it helps you travel from one place to another by means of transportation like cars,
motorcycle
and many more.
