Australia is the world’s smallest continent and largest island. It is one of the
oldest land masses and flattest of all the continents. After Antarctica,
Australia is the second driest continent. Most areas of Australia are semi
desert or arid, almost 40 percent is North of the Tropic of Capricorn. On its
Western coast is the Indian Ocean and on its East, the Coral and Tasman
seas of the South Pacific Ocean. Australia is the only nation which occupies
an entire continent.

MONEY MONEY MATTERS
Many women are unwilling to invest in stocks and shares, for instance, but
these can be extremely profitable. It is usually advised that at least 70% of
a person's savings should be in low-risk investments but for the rest,
financial advisors often advise taking some well-informed risks. Initiatives
such as this can give women the economic skills and knowledge they need
for a comfortable, independent retirement.

NATURE NATURE (1)
They had no way of knowing that the real source of their misfortunes had
occurred a year ago thousands of miles away. The 1815 eruption of Mount
Tambora on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa was what is known as a
supervolcano, characterized by a volume of erupted material, many times
greater than that of ordinary volcanoes.
NATURE (2)
For my presentation, I’m going to summarize what I’ve found out about efforts to
save one plant species ... the juniper bush. It once flourished in Britain and
throughout the world’s temperate zones, but over the last few decades has
declined considerably…
Firstly, I want to emphasize the fact that juniper is a very ancient plant. It has
been discovered that it was actually amongst the first species of plants to
establish itself in Britain in the period following the most recent Ice Age.

COUNTRIES
What we’re planning to do is more research into water festivals. We found that in
Asian countries where there aren’t any carnival celebrations, there are still festivals
that involve people splashing each other with water. Actually, we’ve found
references to them in Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Japan. But
we also found a reference to a water festival in Mexico. So we thought we’d
look into that’s a bit more and see if we can find any similarities between
these countries.

Mandy: Right. So the next thing is to decide which cultures we should talk
about. I think we need to include Arab culture. Ibrahim knows all about
families in the Arab Gulf and Mona knows about North Africa. They are both
very different, I think. What do you think, Mona?
Mona: Yes, that would be a good start and then other places. How about
somewhere else in Africa? I could talk to David from South Africa.
Ibrahim: I agree with Mona. Why don’t we then talk about families from one
Western country?
Edward: I’m happy with that. I could talk about US families. They’re interesting.

worried about the height, but the width’s quite important. Can you tell me
how wide each of them is?
Mrs Blake: They’re both exactly the same size. Let me see… I’ve got the
details written down somewhere. Yes. So they’re both 75cm wide and 180cm

COLOR COLOR
Another section that’s very interesting is called 'Colour in culture'. Here, there are
a number of activities designed to illustrate the powerful links that exist
between colour and certain aspects of our lifestyle, and this is done through
a range of images and objects. You can visit the color cafe that contains meals
that really make you question how conditioned you are. How hungry do you
feel you're faced with a plate of pink and green fried eggs and blue
sausages, for example? This section also includes activities that give visitors
some idea of what it's like to view the world with a visual disability, which is
something that many people have to do.

TIME TIME EXPRESSIONS
Tom: I think I’ll start with the climbing club – it sounds good.
Rachel: Oh well, as I said. I’m in that so I might be able to help you a bit.
Tom: OK. It says in the leaflet that they get together twice a month. Is that
right?
Rachel: Yes. Oh, you must join. It’s really good fun. We go away quite a bit to
North Wales and every year we have a special excursion, usually to France,
which is where we’re going this year in the spring. The weather’s too unpredictable
in the autumn.
IN THE CITY
Vicky: It’s next to the theatre, just between the bus stop and the shops.
But, if you’re more into fast food, like burgers … or … umm … Chinese stir-fry,
or fried chicken, there’s a huge fast food hall in the middle of the campus.
Vicky: But if you want a quiet place to have a coffee and a pastry, there’s a snack
bar by the lake. It has wi-fi and an internet café, and … it has a spectacular
view over the lake.

HEALTH HEALTH (1)
Erm… there are usually some small changes that doctors make. Let me see what it
says about the Shore Lane Centre. If you want to be vaccinated before any
trips abroad, you won’t have to pay for this. Erm, what else? The sports injury
treatment service operates on a paying basis, as does the nutritional
therapy service. Some health centres do offer alternative therapies like
homeopathy as acupuncture. And finally, if you need to prove you’re healthy
or haven’t had any serious injuries before a new employer will accept you,
you can get a free fitness check-up there, but you’d most likely have to pay
for insurance medicals though.
HEALTH (2)
Mostly, we grow fruit, but we also keep chickens, ducks and dairy cows. So,
we have to work outside quite a lot, even in the winter, when it’s cold and dark.
That’s the worst part of the job, really, you know, having to go out in the rain
and snow to feed the animals. But the summer’s totally different. I really enjoy
being outdoors, helping the fruit pickers and loading the trucks. We deliver
most of our fruit to
supermarkets, but we also supply local shops with our milk, eggs and
cheese. In fact, we produce so much cheese and fruit that we even sell
them directly to the public in out farm shop.

PLACES PLACES
Firstly, let’s look at the idea that women spend a lot of money on expensive shoes.
Actually, this isn’t true. In fact, women buy a lot of cheap shoes. Men, on the other
hand, try to save money by buying special offers. What is surprising about
women, though, is that they like shopping in expensive or exclusive
boutiques. And, it isn’t true that they always make a shopping list when they
go to the supermarket.

I can see some of you are thinking that it all sounds rather dangerous. But I
know lots of people who’ve been there and had a really great time. They followed
advice from the authorities, like making sure they didn’t wear expensive
jewellery in the street. And I’d certainly advise anyone travelling to Latin
America to do the same. Another thing you should be careful of is not to go to
lonely places at night. But, of course, that’s the same anywhere.
18. CHỦ ĐỀ ARCHITECTURE - BUILDINGS
Hello everybody. So as part of our study program this term, we've researched
an aspect of archaeology which has some kind of mystery attached to it. I'm
going to talk about the mysteries of the Great Pyramids of Egypt. In
particular, I'm going to concentrate on the theories surrounding how the
pyramids were built. I'm going to start by putting pyramids into their
historical context.

EDUCATION EDUCATION
B: Ah, well, the Economics I course is a double unit so there are two
lectures a week and one tutorial. The lectures are scheduled for
Tuesday and Thursday.
A: What time?
B: Let me see ... You know this information is all in the handout, which you
should have received yesterday, at the orientation meeting.
A: OK. Shall we start with your interests? What do you like doing best?
B: Oh no! Not running! I like walking, but I hate running. I’m afraid the
running club isn’t for me or the cycling club.

A small port was already established here when, about 900 years ago, tin
was discovered nearby, though it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution, when
a tremendous need for metals of all kinds developed, that Manham
expanded to become one of the busiest ports in the country.
And because it was already so busy, prospectors began to look for other
minerals, and by the end of the nineteenth century, lead, copper,
manganese and arsenic were added to the cargos leaving Manham.
The invention of agriculture some 10,000 years ago disrupted these ancient
soil- building processes and led to the loss of carbon from the soil. When
humans started draining the natural topsoil, and ploughing it up for planting,
they exposed the buried carbon to oxygen. This created carbon dioxide
and released it into the air. And in some places, grazing by domesticated
animals has removed all vegetation, releasing carbon into the air. Tons of
carbon have been stripped from the world’s soils - where it’s needed - and
pumped into the atmosphere.

TOURING TOURING
A: I’d like to see Harrods, but I don’t think we’ll have time for shopping and I don’t
know Hyde Park so we’ll not go on that route. So we’d probably choose the red or
yellow. What do we have to do about booking?
B: If you want to book you can do that with one of our customer service
operators on the phone. Or otherwise you can go to our website and book.
Some people just arrive on the day and buy a ticket on the bus, but if it’s full
you may not be able to get a seat.
24. CHỦ ĐỀ ARTS - MEDIA
ARTS AND MEDIA
B: Well I’ve seen the prospectus for the course but I’m still a bit confused about
a few things and about some of the options for studying.
B: Yes, I’ve been working as a journalist for a local newspaper for the last 3
months. Prior to that I had two jobs in the media – at a small local radio
station for about 2 years and at a TV station for about 4 years. So I’ve worked in
media for about six years in total.
