Teschin Bridge (Mother in law's Bridge) is the name of the pedestrian bridge that
runs over the Military Descent and connects Zhvanetsky Boulevard with Primorsky
Boulevard.
It was erected over the Military Descent in 1968 by the architect Vladimirskaya and
engineer Kiriyenko. The bridge was built by order of M. Sinitsa, the first secretary of
the regional party committee in Odessa. This is the longest (130 m), highest (30 m)
and narrowest pedestrian bridge in Odessa. It is also interesting to know that the
bridge is a smaller copy of the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge in Luxembourg,
built-in 1965.
Previously, the bridge was called Kapitan or Komsomolsky. However, another name
has firmly stuck to it - Teschin Bridge. Either because it is so long and narrow (like
the mother-in-law's tongue), or because of the legends from the chatty Odessa
courtyards.
The most popular one sounds like this: it is rumoured that the aforementioned Tit
really loved mother-in-law's pancakes, and the mother-in-law and son-in-law
supposedly lived on different boulevards, and the son-in-law did not like to walk
around the Sabaneev Bridge. Therefore, he built a bridge that had practically no
communication significance for the city. However, there is information that in fact, the
mother-in-law of Tit lived in the area of the City Garden. Another humorous legend
says that men, tortured by their mothers-in-law, rushed down from this bridge, hence
the name.
Another version is related to the bridge feature. The fact is that it swings in the wind.
If you just stop and listen, you can feel the bridge canvas "walking" under your feet.
Speaking jokingly, he swings just like a mother-in-law's tongue.
Teschin Bridge is very popular with both city guests and newlyweds and just couples
in love. There is a registry office nearby and you can often witness a touching
wedding tradition when the bride and groom are happily photographed on the bridge,
attaching their "happiness lock" to it - a small symbol of eternal love and good luck in
family life. There are already several thousand such locks of different shapes and
sizes with all kinds of inscriptions on the theme "Together and forever", names and
dates of weddings, declarations of love. With oaths of loyalty and heartfelt wishes,
the lock is locked with a key, and the key is thrown into the sea.
There is another tradition that the bridge is famous for, which is relatively young: for
several years now, an unofficial Mother-in-law's Day has been celebrated on the
Mother-in-Law's Bridge. It was initiated by the son-in-law of the above-mentioned
mayor Mikhail Sinitsa - Vladimir Melnikov, who on February 16 treats people walking
on the bridge with pickles, tells them about the history of the bridge construction and
tells the newlyweds that the mother-in-law is "the main ruler in the house."
