Learning English at an Early Age
English is one of the best skill a person can possess especially here in the
Philippines. Learning and being fluent with it at a young age develops a lot of skill of a
child such as communication skills, critical-thinking and in addition to this it improves the
child’s memory, concentration, enhanced creativity and the mental flexibility. This is also
a great time for the parents or caregivers of the child to have a bonding moment with
them, they can make it more fun by using songs or rhymes this way adults can stimulate
the child’s eagerness or attention and where both the parent and the child can learn and
have fun. Though teaching English to toddlers or at a very young age can quite be
difficult due to the fact that child has low level of listening, easily distracted or get bored
so easily.
although learning English and being bilingual has a lot to offer in the future such as
studying abroad as a exchange student or job opportunities, but we could not ignore the
possibilities that over exposure to English might put a child in a difficult situation most
likely to schools. Students who are more fluent in English rather that their mother
tongue are getting pick at school by their peers because they cannot understand each
other. Also, students who are over exposed to English has a hard time explaining their
thoughts and opinions with the people around them.
It is good for children to learn English at a young age but parents should balanced their
exposure to it to avoid the problems stated above especially now that technology and
internet is all around us.
