Subject: My home, my room and my town.

Hi Niko, thanks for your email the other day. Well, here is the information you asked me
for. I live in a big 4-bedroom, detached house on the outskirts of Toronto. Our house has
a front porch and a back yard. We have a garage where my dad keeps all his tools.
I keep my bike there too. My room has two big windows that look onto the back yard
and I have my own bathroom. My bed is next to one window and my computer desk
and all my games are close to the bed. There’s another big desk for all my school stuff
near the other window. I have an armchair too where I sit to watch T.V. The room’s
quite light and it has a blue carpet and there are yellow curtains at the windows. It’s the
opposite in the bathroom because there it’s the carpet which is yellow. The bathroom
has a small window, a shower, a wash basin, the toilet and some shelves above the
mirror over the basin.
You asked me about the neighborhood I live in...well, it’s a quiet place. Just houses, no
stores or anything. There’s a bus stop on the corner of our street. You can take a bus
into downtown from there. There’s a park about 10 blocks away too. It takes me 3
minutes to get there if I bike really fast. OK Niko, write soon. Rob.

WELSH MOUNTAINS

“Taking in !” The words floated down from on high to be swiftly followed by a tightening of the climbing
rope by my feet. I shouted automatically “That’s me!”
(0)
G
It all seemed very familiar, but for many years my climbing rope had hung frustratingly at the foot of my
stairs, and I was now sixty. John, my old climbing partner on so many climbs, had suggested that we might
climb together again.
(1)

John and I had shared so many memorable climbs. My mind went back to the last long climb we had enjoyed
together, which was on the Lliwedd mountain during a June heat wave. The streams had dried up and all the
grasses were burnt yellow by the sun. As we neared the cliff and stopped for a rest, John suddenly
disappeared to return some considerable time later clutching a small plastic bag filled with the coolest,
clearest water that you could imagine.
(2)

We climbed in the shadow of a great cliff. We finally arrived at the top of the climb on the west summit. To
our amazement, we saw that storm clouds were tumbling over the Nantile hills like a huge waterfall, their
progress slow, but threatening.
(3)

We collected the rope and hurried down to our camp, racing against nature. John cooked our dinner as the
first rumbles of thunder sent us hurrying into the tent. A storm in the hills is an experience not to be
missed. We completed our meal, and crept into our sleeping bags. Thunder echoed around the hills
and the lightening lit up the landscape. Sleep would not come and so we lay there marvelling at the
power of nature.

We no longer needed a plastic bag to collect the water. The rain came down in sheets, drumming on the tent,
but we were dry in our man-made cavern, fascinated by the power and majesty of the storm around us.
(4)

Then suddenly I felt a gentle tug on the rope, followed by a more urgent one, suggesting that I should make
a move. “Climbing!” I shouted, and started up the steep slab above. When I neared the top, I could see John’s
feet dangling in space. He had obviously found somewhere comfortable to sit and look at the view.
(5)

A:
Finally, it died away like the outgoing tide and, in the deepening silence, sleep drifted into the tent.
The next day would bring another adventure.

B:
I took no persuading, and so here I was. The legs didn’t bend so easily now, but the spirit was
more than willing. The thrill of climbing was still the same, and conquering the few feet of rock
was just as exciting as it had always been.

C:
As I got closer, he peered down grinning from ear to ear. “Daydreaming ?” he enquired. Nothing
had changed. Time had marched on and my limbs were a little stiffer, but the hills were the same.

D:
It was heaven. I had wondered what was taking so long; he had found some trickling over mosses
and with great patience had captured half a cup full in the plastic bag. We took it in turns to have a
sip until it had all gone and then plodded across the hillside to our chosen route.

E:
I needn’t have worried: he was up in no time and it was all I could do to take in the rope fast
enough. We set off down the mountains as fast as we dared in the conditions.

F:
We ignored their presence and relaxed in the evening sunlight, watching their relentless progress
out of the corner of our eyes for some considerable time, until the truth suddenly dawned on us:
our heat wave was coming to a sudden end.

G:
What was I saying and what was I doing standing on a thin rock ledge, tied to a spike of rock with
space below my feet and the mountains of Snowdonia spread out before me?

Read the following article and then select the correct option (a, b, c, d or e) for
each of the questions 1 to 10..

How to survive a plane crash

Flying may the safest form of transport, but many of the 3,000,000 people who take to the skies every day
are terrified of crashing. However, keeping a few simple things in mind can greatly increase your chances
of survival.
Modern advances in technology now mean that over 90% of plane crashes have survivors.
Some of the things that can help you in the event of an emergency situation are:
Knowing how to undo your seatbelt quickly; it doesn’t work the same as a car seat belt release.
Counting the number of seat rows from you to the nearest two exits; if there is a lot of smoke due
to fire, you won’t be able to see the exits and will have to ‘feel’ your way along.
Make a plan of exit; plan your escape route carefully as soon as you sit down.
Look around and see where your nearest cabin crew are situated; they are the ones who will tell
you what to do.
Many passengers believe that there are certain seats on board an aeroplane that are safer than others but
the truth is that every crash is unique and you can never tell how the plane is going to break up or which
part of the fuselage is going to hit first. The area over the wings is the most structurally reinforced, but if
there is a fire in the engines, the wing area is the worst place you could be as most of the fuel needed for
the flight is stored in tanks in the wings.
Aviation experts believe that remaining composed is essential in any emergency situation and would like to
recommend that passengers pay close attention to the safety announcements given before take off, no
matter how often they fly.
‘Knowing how to adopt the brace position, where to locate your life vest, and being ready to leave your
bags and high heeled shoes behind if you have to evacuate the plane via the inflatable chutes is essential if
you want to be prepared to survive’, say crash specialists.

Can you tell me all your information; things like when and where were you born ?, how many
brothers and sisters you have ?, what are your parents names ?, have you got any pets. What do
you like to do on weekends and what did you do last birthday ? When is your birthday ?
I will put all this information in my book with the photograph you sent me last summer. Thanks. I
hope you are ok.
Bye for now, Tony
