1
How teeth and Forensic Dentistry helps in
investigations ?

Forensic Dentistry is an important part of forensic
science, as it works on human identifications before and
after death, bite marks, sex, race, age and height, using
various techniques, including dental and facial
radiographs, DNA and analysis of clinical records.

2
What makes teeth so significant in an
investigation ?

Teeth, especially dental pulp, are important sources of
DNA, as they resist different types of degradation better
than any human tissue, enabling the preservation of
individual genetic identity.

3
History

The history of bite mark analysis began in 1954 with a
piece of cheese in a small Texas town. A dentist said
there was a bite mark on a cheese, which was left
behind in a stolen grocery store. The man was
condemned.

4
First case

The first court case involving a bite mark on a person
took place in 1974 in Texas. Two dentists testified that a
man's teeth resembled a bite mark, which was found on
a murder victim. Although the defense attorney fought
the admissibility of the evidence, the court ruled that bite
analysis could be used.
