ADVANCED CALCULUS MODULE 1
LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION TO CALCULUS

MOTIVATION
A popular quote says, “There is nothing constant in this world but change”. What does it mean
to you? How important is “change” in our daily life?
- We all face changes every day – whether it is a simple change in the weather, our
schedule or expected change of seasons. Change affects us all and we each deal with
change differently. This only constant in life, the only thing we can be sure will happen.
To expect change has brought me hope during challenging or unexpected life events.
This same thought has also brought fear in situations where the last thing I wanted was
change. I’ve come to realize it’s not the circumstances or the changes that dictate how
my life will go, but rather how I handle those changes and disruptions. No matter the
change we experience, how we embrace that change will forever impact how we are
able to live with the change.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
WRITING DOWN MY LEARNING

Things I have Learned Expectations / Reactions about Calculus

1. Differential Calculus And Integral Calculus. —I expect to learn more about that topic.
The differences of the two branches of
calculus, their functions and how to use
them.
2. Mathematician Who Contributed To The —Those mathematician contributed a lot
Development Of Calculus that’s why we have all these formulas and
solutions and I want to learn and understand
all that here in this class.
ASSESSMENT
1. Aside from the mathematicians mentioned, name other mathematicians who
contributed to the development of Calculus. Name at least 3. (10 points)
—Roman Sznajder
—Harley Flanders
—George Stoica

2. Search for other applications of Calculus in real life, specifically in biology and other life
sciences. Name at least 3. (10 points)
—Calculus was used to develop the Cockroft-Gault equation, which determines the
appropriate drug dosage for patients with certain kidney diseases based on the level of
creatinine in their blood.
—Hydraulic Analysis Programs
— Space Exploration (Space engineers)
